Hi,
On your obit you posted for Mrs. Rheuemma Werkheiser, one of the family was Mrs. Cecilia Phillips. I have been trying to contact any Phillips family in the Stroudsburg area for several years without success. For some reason, my great grandfather William Martz was raised by John and Rebecah Phillips from the time he was about 5 years old. I have never been able to find out who his parents were and why he lived with that family. I have been to their grave sites (John and Rebecah) at the Schoolhouse but cannot find any grave for my great grandfather. If you have a contact for the Phillips family I am hoping they may be the key to my dilemma.

Hi. First, I posted that obit because I came across it while doing other research. I have no connection to that family. However, I did locate information that lists Ceceilia Phillips' husband as Lewis - son of Daniel, so I don't think it is the same family you are seeking. I did find William H. Martz, age 18, living with John & Rebecca in the 1860 census in Ross, Monroe County, Pa.

Also, there is a Pennsylvania Veteran burial card for William H. Martz, born about 1841, died Oct 3, 1881 and buried in Fairview Cemetery, Altoona. Blair County, Pa., who served in the army in the Civil War. Could that be him?

Hi,
Thanks for confirming Wm. Martz living with the Phillip family. I don't believe he moved from the Ross Twp. area because soon after his first wife died, (my gr grandmother Sarah Zacharias) he immediately married Emma Houch and had two more children with her. He died soon after that marriage but not before he fathered two more children who I never could find on any census. I am assuming that Emma either remarried and the children took another name. Another one of my families mysteries.

I got excited when I found this on another message...

"William was born about 1845. He married Sarah Zacharias August 15, 1863....He married Emma Houch 1877...
William's body was interred in Mt Zion Cemetery, Hamilton township, Monroe county, Pennsylvania. William's cemetery stone indicates he was in the 67th regiment. Birth and death dates are not listed. The square stone reads:
'Wm. Martz 67reg."

Then I realized that you had already replied to it. Guess it isn't your William after all?

I also looked them up in the 1880 Census, in case you don't already have it:

Name: William Martz
Birthplace: Pennsylvania
Home in 1880: Hamilton, Monroe, Pennsylvania
Race: White
Gender: Male
Relation to Head of House: Self (Head)
Marital Status: Married
Spouse's Name: Emma Martz
Father's Birthplace: Pennsylvania
Mother's Birthplace: Pennsylvania
Neighbors: View others on page
Occupation: Laborer
Household Members: Name Age
William Martz 35
Emma Martz 25
Mary Martz 14
John Martz 12
William Martz 2
Christiana Martz 8m

Good luck!

Valerie

YES! This is the family. I walked the Hamilton Church cemetery but could not find them. Where is the Mt. Zion Cemetery located? If I could only find out why Wm. was raised by the Phillips family, I might be able to find his parents. Thanks so much for your help.

First, here's a link to Mt. Zion Cemetery:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=45...;

I think I found a marriage notice for William but they printed his last name as "Kurtz" instead of "Martz":

"Married: On the 15th inst., at the Lutheran Parsonage by Rev. Henry Seifert, Mr. William H. Kurtz and Miss Sarah Zacharias, both of Hamilton township, Monroe county, Pa."
The Monroe Democrat, Stroudsburg, Pa., Thursday, August 27th, 1863; Page 3, column 1.

Spellings will mislead! I came across that one too. Also, I saw the name Zacharias on my grandfathers death certificate and could not for the longest time figure out the 'Z'. That discovery opened up the gates for a whole new family of Zacharias's.I am living in AL now but try to get back to PA to visit 2 brothers once a year. Thanks for all your help.

Hi,
I tried the Mt. Olive site but it did not recognize the Martz name. Because the grave is so old it has never been posted?

Find-A-Grave is all supplied by volunteers and often it's only those graves which are part of someone's research. Perhaps no one has uploaded the information for William Martz's grave at Mt.Zion because they weren't researching his line.
