Obituary for Hair Family Member
I have been searching for an obituary for Ellie Judson Hair from Barnwell, SC. I don't have a death date, but narrowed his death between the 1930 and 1940 Census. He appeared in the 1930 Census as a boarder.
He may be buried in the same cemetery as his parents Melvin Mixon Hair and Mary Elizabeth Birt Hair. They are buried in the Hair Cemetery in Williston, SC.
I live in Virginia and wondered if anyone lives in or near Barnwell and would be able to check the cemetery to see if there is a headstone for Ellie Judson Hair?
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Re: Obituary for Hair Family Member
I see Melvin and Mary E. Hair listed in Hair Cemetery but so far do not see Ellie Judson Hair. Have you looked much on the SC Death certificate database?

Re: Obituary for Hair Family Member
Thank you for your help with this search.
Is there a website that I can go on to search for his death certificate? I haven't come across one that I can search without a trip to the SC Archives Library and without subscribing to another source.
Thanks again!!

Re: Obituary for Hair Family Member
If you don't have ancestry sub then try familysearch.org. Select United States then South Carolina then you will see SC Death Records 1915-1943. The more you can narrow down the the death date the better. I did a quick look on Ancestry but didn't see him yet. Since 1940 census just came online could he be alive in 1940?
I'll also check with a friend who has done some Hair research to see if any names are familiar. I wish Barnwell paper was online but I haven't found that database yet. I have Aiken historical subscription but I don't usually find too much toward Elko/Barnwell in the deaths.

Re: Obituary for Hair Family Member
I do have a subscription to Ancestry and didn't find him listed after 1930. I checked the new online 1940 census records for Barnwell and Williston and couldn't find him.
In familysearch.org, I found the Court Probate papers for his father's Will. It named his wife Mary and his son Ellie as heirs. Ellie didn't show up in the death records for 1915-1945. I was thrilled to receive Melvin's obit from a forum reader which mentions Mary and Ellie.
In 1920 neither Mary or Ellie show up in the Census records. Mary died in 1927 and Ellie pops up in the 1930 Census.
If your friend can provide any info, that would be great. I can certainly share any info that I have on the Hairs with her.

Re: Obituary for Hair Family Member
Hair history has Ellie Judson Hair born Nov. 17, 1871 and died May 15, 1935. Not listed where he is buried and don't find a death cert so far for him. History says he married Lillie Belle Baxley (no dates listed). A note with info on a daughter said that family may be in FL. Contact me at cyhardy at pbtcomm.net and I will see if I can hook you up with a fellow researcher. I'm not sure if she has much more info on your group and how good this history is sourced, but it may give you some leads. I'll check out the date on my newspaper subscriptions just in case he has an obit. Cynthia

Re: Obituary for Hair Family Member
Thanks, Cynthia.
Ellie did marry Lillie Baxley around 1893. I think they may have separated around 1910 and she moved to FL with her daughter's family in the late 1920s. Their son Melvin Leroy Hair moved to FL with his wife and children, also.
The birth and death dates given in your message are for Lillie Baxley Hair. Ellie was born on October 15, 1873 according to his WW I draft registration.
I'll email you at the address you gave me. I would enjoy connecting with a fellow researcher.
Thanks again for trying to help me find Ellie!
