WALNUT COVE,NC - Mr. Eldridge Burgess "Jock" Lloyd, 85, died Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center.

He was born in Columbia, Tenn., to Daniel Eugene and Mary Ella Waddy Lloyd and was reared in Danville, Va.

He served in the Navy' s first special Warfare Commandos, the Scouts and Raiders, which is now known as the Navy Seals, and he received the Purple Heart while in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Lloyd received his Bachelor of Arts from Elon College and then taught school in Georgia, Colorado and the North Carolina counties of Guilford, Allegany and Stokes. Stokes County was fortunate to have such an excellent teacher who related so well to the students. He was also a seasonal ranger for the Blue Ridge Parkway for six years and an all-around outdoorsman. Some of his favorite activities were trout fishing, bird hunting, hiking, canoeing, bicycling and running. He began running at the age of 60 and completed 872 races, including 66 marathons.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Bell, Lillie Lloyd, Margaret Lloyd and Catherine Midgett; and a brother, Daniel E. Lloyd Jr.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Evelyn Harvey Lloyd; daughter and son-in-law Theresa Lloyd and Dan Kleeman; two brothers, William Lloyd and George (Ethel) Lloyd; Rebecca Paff, who was like a second daughter; two nieces; four nephews; his golden retriever, Daphne; and many extended family members and friends.

A 2 p.m. celebration of Mr. Lloyd' s life will be held Saturday, March 8, at Burroughs Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Jennie L. Hemrick officiating. Burial will follow in Walnut COVE Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, March 7, at the funeral home, and other times at the home. The family requests that memorials be made to Friends of the Blue Ridge Parkway, P.O. Box 341, Arden, NC 28704, or P.O. Box 20986, Roanoke, VA 24018.

I noticed your surnames included WADDY. Also that the maiden name of Mr. Lloyd's mother was WADDY and that he was born in Columbia, Tennessee.

Would you have the name Frank WADDY in your records? He was born cir 1883 in Tennessee. He appears in the 1910 Giles Co., TN. census. His wife is named Lula. I believe that it is possible that Lula's maiden name was Scott. In this census, there was a son named Jerry age 5. I believe they later had a daughter named Lola Pearl WADDY. This family moved to Dallas Co., Texas.

There are so few Waddy's in and around Giles Co. Maury Co. borders Giles Co. and I have found several Waddy's buried in cemeteries in Maury Co.

Just wondering if this Mary Ella WADDY mother of Mr. Lloyd might be connected to this Frank WADDY and/or the Waddy's listed below.

The Waddy's buried in Maury Co. are:

D.E. Waddey born Sept. 19, 1874, died May 18, 1947 and Elizabeth Laura Fox Waddey 1889-1920 both buried in Godwin Cem.:

John C. Waddey born 1872, died Nov. 15, 1925 and Josie M. Waddey 1881-1971-both buried at Rose Hill Cem.

James William WADDY 1861-1950 buried Arlington Cem.

Would any of these ring a bell to you?
