Hoping someone could help me with my Great Grandfather, John M Sherlock born 24 June 1876. Came to America 1890(Baltimore, Md). Eventually found his way to Ohio where he married Anne C. Quinn on 26 Sept,1900. They had 10 children. Looking for his parents names and dates of birth/death. Possible city/province from where John came from. Also, hoping I have some distant cousins out there to contact, or someday visit. Thanks - I can be reached at boppgirl3@gmail.com.

I'm hoping that I'll find a bit of info. John Sherlock's 1920 Census indicates he's from Austria Stovonia(?) and speaks German. I'm guessing their town was on the border of the two countries.

no idea what Stovonia should be. similar sounds Slovenia but just this name at that time was not usual for a country he could come from. his name don´t sound austrian. it´s simple an english name.
any more info?

Ellisisland has a samenamed person looks like has worked on ships and he was british: http://www.ellisisland.org/search/matchMore.asp?FNM=JOHN&...
example:
First Name: John
Last Name: Sherlock
Ethnicity: Great Britain, English
Last Place of Residence:
Date of Arrival: Nov 08, 1919
Age at Arrival: 22y Gender: M Marital Status:
Ship of Travel: Royal George
Port of Departure: Southampton
Manifest Line Number: 0023

i can´t understand the connection to Austria with an english name. has he changed the name in the US?

Could it be that the name was phonetically adapted to English after arrival in the USA? I am thinking of the name Schellack which exists in Austria, or variations such as Schelak, Selak, Schelack and more.

Do you have a copy of the arrival manifest of 1890 in Baltimore?

Couldn't be the same John Sherlock as my great grandfather. John was already married in 1900 and raising kids in Cleveland.

Possible. My cousin's wife is from Austria and she said it was most likely spelled Johann Scurloch or something along that line. I have another family tree member who indicated that he arrived via Baltimore, Maryland. Also, found exact date of birth and a matching date of arrival from family tree member thru rootsweb.com, for John's Naturalization application. Said he arrived May 15, 1890 Baltimore, MD and was naturalized Oct. 27. 1904. Have Census from 1900(just before he married), that he was a servant under Henry and Emma Bournique. I believe that this is my great grandfather. I'm hoping to get back down to our Western Reserve Historical Society to look thru the passenger lists for that date. I'm hoping they have some type of info or copies of documents on microfilm. Thanks.

in any case will not haven been a "german" name. it sounds for a slavic orgin.
not to forget that Austria now is a small country - the Austrian-Hungarian Empire with his crownlands ended after WW1 and many of them became own countries. think his homeland today not will be still "austrian".

Okay - I'll keep that in mind. I'm wondering since he gave both Austria-Stovenia(Slovenia, whatever), could be the town he grew up in was on that border. Border lines change all the time. Thanks.

Slovenia was once the austrian-hungarian crownland Krain, also the former Untersteiermark and parts of Küstenland until end of WW1 in 1919 > in english Carniola, because of this he stated "austrian-slovenian", nothing to do with "border-changing".
