Hi,
Can anyone do Scranton obit look ups if I provide the name & date of death? The list is large but I am at a hopeless dead-end with both maternal & paternal sides of my families. Perhaps an old obit will hold some clues or even a scrap of information? Everyone died in Scranton with the exception of 2 people noted below.
Any help at all would be SO greatly appreciated : )

Hi Ali,

For all of the deaths after 1906, I'd suggest you get death certificates from PA, if you haven't already. You can find the indices here: http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt?open=514&...

You can also search the Scranton Tribune, issues from 1897 to 1902 here http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn84026355/

I have had a lot of luck with that.

Unfortunately, I am not in Scranton, so I can't help you.

The death certs are on order.
Do you have any idea what the actual time is to get them back.
The website says 16-18 weeks so I was wondering if that is really the time frame?

Hi Ali,

That sounds about right, unfortunately. My check was chashed in early January and I am still waiting. I understood that the state has had to cut a lot of jobs, so that the department is seriously understaffed.

Scranton Times, Friday January 9, 1953

Mrs. Kathryn Gerrity Flynn, 511 Taylor Ave., wife of the late Thomas Flynn, died yesterday afternoon at home after a short illness.
Her husband was a senior partner for many years of the Flynn & Bird Contracting Company, and she was acitive in chutch and civic betterment affairs in the Hill section for a long time. A good neighbor and very charitable, Mrs. Flynn will be missed by a wide legion of friends.
Mrs. Flynn was born in County Mayo, Ireland, and had resided in the city since the age of seven. She was a communicant of St. Peter's Cathedral and a member of its Alter and Rosary Society.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Michael Mitchell, this city, Mrs. Catherine Serio, Bloomfield, NJ, four sons - Thomas, Philadelphia, William and Robert, both of this city, and Joseph, Miami, FL; a sister, Mrs. Mary Regan, this city, 14 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Monday from home with Mass at 9:30 in St. Peter's Cathedral. Interment in Cathedral cemetery. Friends may call tonight after 7.

Scranton Times, Saturday, Oct. 4, 1958

William McGuire, 131 Penn Ave., died last night at home after a brief illness.
A lifelong Scranton resident, he was the son of the late Michael and Mary Ann Conway, McGuire. Prior to retirement seven years ago, he was employed as a welder by the Hudson Coal Co.
Mr. McGuire was a member of St. Peter's Cathedral and its Holy Name Society.
Surviving besides his wife, the former Theresa Conover, are four daughters, Mrs. John Cruthers, California, Mrs. John Buntz, Mrs. WIlliam Ogden, and Ann McGuire, all of this city; two sons, Edward and William, also of Scranton; two sisters, Margaret McGuire, and Mrs. Thomas McDonnell, both of Scranton; a brother, Daniel, of New York City, and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday from the Walsh Funeral Home, 715 Linden St., with Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Peter's Cathedral. Interment in Cathedral cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 - 5 and 7 - 9 p.m. beginning tomorrow.

Mrs. Theresa M. McGuire, 1317 Mulberry St., died this morning in Community Medical Center East, where she had been a patient the past two weeks. Her husband William died in 1958.
Born in Red Bank, NJ, she formerly lived on Blakely Street, Dunmore. Mrs. McGuire formerly worked for the Scranton Lace Company for a number of years and later was a clerk in the Lido Lingerie shop on Spruce St. before retiring in January. She was a daughter of the late Frederick and Mary Sheerin Conover, and a member of St. Peter's Cathedral and its Altar and Rosary Society.
Surviving are four daughters: Mrs. Robert Carruthers, Hawaii, and Mrs. Robert Flynn, Mrs. John Buntz, and Mrs. William Ogden, this city; two sons, William, Somerville, NJ, and Edward at home, and 14 grandchildren.
Funeral will be Staurday at 9 a.m. from the Walsh Funeral Home, 715 Linden St., with Mass at 9:30 in St. Peter's Cathedral. Interment in Mount Carmel cemetery, Dunmore.
Friends may call tonight from 7 - 9 and thereafter from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Robert M.Flynn of Park Gardens, doed at Mercy Hospital yesterday after being stricken ill at home. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Robert Flynn and Catherine Wren. Mr. Flynnis a former member of St. Patrick's church, a graduate of Scranton Tech, and US Navy veteran. He was employed as a clerk by the D&H railroad prior to his retirement.
A devoted husband, father and granfather, his family loved him dearly. He is survivied by his wife, the former Ann McGuire, and five sons: Timothy, Scranton, Matthew, Miami, FL; Daniel, Lansing, MI; Michael, King of Prussia, PA; Robert, Jr., of Glkendale, CA; a daughter, Elizabeth, Scranton, and six sisters, Mrs. Mary Degman, Louisville, KY; Mrs. Nancy Martin, Moscow; Mrs. Jane Malia and Mrs. Grace Lynn, both of Scranton; Mrs. Catherine Coyne, Cinnamonson, NJ, and Mrs. Debra Karp, Clark's Summit; three grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The Frank M. Regan Funeral Home, 715 Linden St., will hold funeral services Wednesday at 9 a.m. A funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. in Immaculate Heart of Mary chapel, Oram St., will proceed his interment in Cathedral cemetery.
Calling hours Tuesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

LIFELONG NATIVITY RESIDENT HAD BEEN ILL SHORT TIME
FUNERAL WILLBE HELD TUESDAY

Myles J. Wren, 512 O'Connor Place, succumberd last night at the family home. He had been ill a short time.
The deceased had been employed by the Scranton Coal Company for 40 years as a maintenance man before his retirement.
Mr. Wren was a communicant of the Church of Holy Nativity and a member of its Holy Name Society.
Surviving are his wife, the former Julia Sonahue, a daughter, Mrs. Robert Flynn, city, and fours sons: Garrett, Joseph, Myles Jr., and Francis, all of this city; a sister Margaret Wren, and brother Lawrence, this city. Eight grandchildren also survive.
Funeral will be held Tuesday morning from the family home with a Requiem Mass in the Chuch of Holy Nativity at 9:30 o'clock. Burial will be in Cathedral cemetery.
Freiends mnay call at the home after 5 o'clock this afternoon.
