I am ,looking for the parents of Elizabeth Cady, b. 6 Jan 1781. She married David Cook in 1798 in Lindley, NY. It was the first marriage in the town. Someone has suggested that her parents were Elijah Cady and Isabel Jackson, but I can find no proof of this. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Perhaps one of her parents left a will that would mention her or her children if she predeceased her parents.

FYI:
I have a Levi Randall Cady 1821-1888
md. 24 Feb 1844
Olive Card 1827-1859
All events in Troupsburg.
This is an offshoot line for me, I have exact dates but nothing else

Here's some Cady's from a few southern Steuben county cemeteries.
Perhaps you can research the oldest Cady's among them and find some leads. I did not see Elizabeth Cady Cook. Happy Hunting!

Thanks for your info. I have been researching the Cooks for many years, and I do not have any records of him having a child named Charles. With the birth years you have, he would have been born during the Revolutionary War - too young to be a veteran. My David Cook who was the war veteran was born in 1752, and had 8 children, none of whom was named Charles. David had a gggggrandson named Charles, born in the late 1800's. Hope this helps clear some things up.

I have also been reseaching the Cooks of Steuben County who were my family. I am familiar with David and Jonathan who settled in Upstate NY. My "deadend" is my direct descendant Epenetus Cook (b. 1786)who appeared in the census of 1810 at age 24 next to other Cooks... David, David Jr, Samuel, and Silas. I do not believe he was one of David's children (Levi,David, Jacob, Samuel, Reuben, Silas, etc.). In the 1800 census, Jonathan, Levy, Samuel, David & David Jr. were listed but no males in the 10-16 bracket where Epenetus would have been had he been is listed. Epenetus eventually moved to Tioga County PA but I am unable to find his father with any certainty. Oddly in a later census he listed Rhode Island as his birth state... NY in another. Any info on his parentage would be appreciated.

Hi my name is Pamela, and I have the same dilemma with Epenetus Cook. I believe he is my 3rd great-grandfather, I believe his daughter was Sarah "Sally" Cook born about 1806 in New Hampshire and I believe there is also a connection to Lorenzo D Cook born about 1808 in New Hampshire as well. My Sarah "Sally" Cook is my 2nd great-grandmother and on the 1850 Tioga County, PA census I am showing possibly an older relative (? mother) living in the household named Susan Cook. Epenetus Cook I believe is also right above them on the census...Sarah "Sally" Cook married my 2nd great-grandfather Daniel H Cady. I am trying to reconnect to this Cook family. Are you possibly the connection?? Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.
Pamela

Hi Pamela – I have outlined below what I know (or think I know). I have found nothing on my 3rd great-grandfather Epenetus Cook (b 1786) prior to the 1810 Census. He continues to be a challenge,

In the 1810 census, 24 year old Epenetus is living with a female 16-26 (wife?) and a female under 10 (maybe your Sarah "Sally" b abt 1806). This is the first record I have of Epenetus (spelled many ways). I cannot find any family connections to the other Cooks listed next to him in the in the 1810 Census of Painted Post, NY (David b 1752 and sons David Jr. b 1776, Samuel b 1779 & Silas b 1782). David b 1752 was the Rev War vet who came into the region from Long Island with his brother Jonathan in 1792. Given his location on the census it is easy to assume a connection to the Long Island Cooks. He also shows up in a 1835 NY census again next to David Sr. Census records differ on Epenetus' place of birth from RI (1840&1860) or NY (1850). If Sally was his daughter and born in NH he must have moved just prior to the 1810 census. If Lorenzo was born around 1808 he doesn't show up in this census. BTW, neighbor David Jr b 1776 married Elizabeth Cady b 1781 so she must have been in the 1810 census as well. .

I cannot find Epenetus in the 1820 census. I looked through every Steuben County census page. He could have moved in with someone and not been recorded as the head of household but in checking David Sr. (then in Troupsburg) and his sons who remained in Painted Post none of the age ranges line up to Epenetus age group.

In the 1830 he shows up in nearby Erwin with a male 15-19 (??) and a female 20-29. This could have been the same wife if she was 19 or under in 1810 however this would mean she was about 15 when Sally was born…. possible but unlikely. Or maybe this was a second wife. By 1830 Sally would have been about 24 and perhaps already married to Daniel Cady and out of the house. Do you have any census record for them?

In 1840 Epenetus is now in Elkland, PA with a female 50-59 (Lucy Miranda Butler of CT b1791). Lucy would be a second (or third) wife since her age didn't match up with the two earlier censuses. There is an Ancestry tree (Pitts448) that had Lucy first married to a Parker B Crandall of RI (d 1830) and having six children with him. Five children are with Albert & Lucy in 1840 and could reflect that blended family. They are males 5-9 (Albert Cook b1835?) and 15-19(??) and females 5-9 (??), 10-14 (Marietta Crandall b1827?), 15-19 (Charlotte Crandall b 1824?). Elizabeth Cook was born in 1840 yet does not appear on this census. She appears on the 1850 census but her birth state is listed as NY so there could be a bit of a contradiction here.

As for the move south, five years earlier an 1835 NY Census for Woodhull lists 3 males and 4 females in the household (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nysteube/wo/wo1835.html). This would mean the blended family moved south to PA between 1835 and 1840. The interesting about this state census is that Epenetus Cook and family are listed next to David Cook Sr. (b 1752). This strengthens a family connection to the Long Island Cooks.

In 1850, Epenetus and Lucy have only two at home, Albert and Elizabeth. This is where you noticed Sally Cady and the older Susan Cook (b 1767) from NH.

By 1860 Epenetus goes by the name "Neat" and lives in Nelson PA with Lucy. Also in the household are son Albert Cook, his wife Lefa (Loop) Lucy's oldest son Orrin Parker, his Henrietta and their five children. This backs up the previous marriage in the Pitts448 tree.

Aside from census records I have the following:

An 1841 item in the Tioga Eagle (Wellsboro, PA) trial list for March (Albert Fowler vs Epenetus Cook et al). No further details.

An 1860 item from the Wellsboro Agitator
http://search.ancestry.com/browse/view.aspx?dbid=8273&pi...

Conclusions:
Epenetus was married to at least once before Lucy Miranda Butler. Sarah (Sally) could have been from the first marriage. If so, that places Epenetus in NH before moving to NY. That is possible. The 1800 census in NY did not have any Cook households with a 14 year old male which would have been his age. I am less certain about Lorenzo since he does not show up in the 1810 census.

One intriguing possibility of the Sally connection is that Susan from NH may have been Epenetus' mother (she would have been 19) however the geography is a little challenging if Epenetus was born in RI. Not impossible. Alternatively she could have been Sally's mother (she would have been 39) since they were both born in NH but that reduces the chances of Epentus' paternity since she would not fit into the 1810 & 1830 age ranges.

There are still many questions. I may try to get my boots on the ground up there. I live near Philadelphia so a road trip is doable.
