Im looking for information on my grandfathers side of the family. all i am able to find out is his name Andrew Straw he married May (Mary) brown in western australia in the early 1900. they had five children - thomas andrew roma jack and william. if anyone could send me more information i would be very grateful. i have no birth dates, year of death or if there were other children, grandchildren etc. The town in WA That they are from is Collie or there abouts. Apparently they were a mining family. May remarried to a bill johnson and had five more children

Andrew and Mary Brown married in Perth, WA in 1921
their children were - Andrew James 1921, Dorothy 1923, William 1925, Thomas 1927, and Jack 1929. Mary married again sometime after 1929 as she had five more children with William Johnson, Roma, Shirley, William, Florence and Robert. I would like to find out when Andrew (snr) was born, if he was older and had another family before Mary, when he died, etc.

It looks like Andrew STRAW died in 1929 (reg 90, Wellington district). Mary S STRAW re-married to William A JOHNSON in 1934 in Perth (reg 376).

Andrew James (b. 1921) married Phyllis R GRAY in 1948 in East Coolgardie district (reg 88).
Dorothy M married Dudley Alfred KIRK (1927-1997) in 1949 in Perth (reg 1331).
Thos Arthur (b. 1927) married Dawn E RICHTER in 1949 in Perth (2628).

Thomas Arthur STRAW married Jessie STEWART in 1890 in Wollongong NSW (reg 7698); they came to Collie WA c1901. This couple had a son named Andrew that I believe is the one you are looking for (who married Mary BROWN), born in Hamilton NSW in 1895 (reg 13268). Jessie died in 1910 (reg 48); Thos the following year (reg 36), both in Wellington district (probably Collie). His marriage certificate would be a good next step.

They had other chn born in NSW:

1. Hugh Samuel b. 1892, d. 29/8/1952 (Collie)
2. Arthur James b. 1894
3. Grace b. 1898, m. Isaac L WHITE (Perth 1927/34), possible death 3/4/1979 (Leederville)
4. Thos Arthur b. 3/10/1900, d. 4/12/1957, m. Ivy B JONES (Wellington 1921/4)

and at least 2 more in Collie, WA:

5. Cedric b. 5/12/1902, d. 7/2/1962 (Collie)
6. Jack b. 14/9/1904, d. 20/9/1983 (Nedlands)

To complicate matters there were other births in the early 1900s in Collie between Andrew James STRAW & Violet May WHITALL. I am not sure if Thos A & Andrew J were siblings? (Hugh's 2nd given name seems a good link.)

This Andrew died in 1904 aged 33, son of Samuel & Sarah nee McNAUGHTON (death reg 2934). He was born in Hamilton, NSW in 1871 (reg 14125, Newcastle district). Andrew married Violet in Newcastle district NSW in 1900 (reg 4334). They must have come to WA almost straight away, as they had a daughter (Muriel Christina) born in Collie in 1901 (reg 5506), then another in 1904 (reg 7002). This fits with them coming at the same time as Thos & Jessie.

Andrew's parents (Samuel & Sarah) married in Newcastle in 1865 (reg 2716). They must have also come over to WA with the family as they died in Wellington district WA (also probably Collie!). Samuel died in 1918 (reg 13) and Sarah in 1908 (reg 21).

Samuel & Sarah also had (at least) 3 other children in NSW: Ellen 1866, Annie Gertrude 1878 and John Samuel 1879. Ellen married James FLINT in 1882 in Lithgow NSW; she died in 1921 (Wellington dist WA reg 177). Annie married John J HASSALL in Sydney NSW in 1905. John married Elizabeth Blair RODGERS in 1907 in Hamilton NSW; he died in Woollahra NSW in 1946 (6766) and Elizabeth in 1961 in Ashfield NSW (3398).

The dorothy from this family was Dorothy S 1923 who married a Harold Bennett.
Thomas A 1927 married a Delores Costello.
thankyou i know we are on the right track as Andrew married Phyllis Gray(Cross). they had 4 children. Andrew was killed in a mining accident 6months before their fourth child was born.
I have also found out that his father Andrew died in 1929 the same year Andrew and Mary's 5th child was born.
This mary Brown's middle name was Susannah.
Maybe the other two Dorothy and Thomas were cousins.

I see in your postings, that you have the surname Gray. I'm searching for information on the Gray family who I believe were originally from Wales, then South Australia
and I believe some of the family ended up in Kalgoorlie/Boulder about 1899 to 1905. Some probably stayed in the area.
The only Gray I currently know of is Henry Gray (defacto to Rosetta Ogilvie, they used to live at Brown Hill about 1900 to 1905. I believe Brown Hill got swallowed by the superpit) who died in Kalgoorlie in 1933. I've been informed there are photo's of some of the Gray boys (miners) in the miners hall of fame. Is there a link in there somewhere.

I am trying to find some information about the straw family originally from collie. My grandfather Thomas Arthur Straw (b.1927) who married dawn e richter in 1949 has just died.

His mother vivienne mabel maria jones married his father Thomas Arthur Straw in 1926 and had 6 children alice, sybil, dolcie,thomas,frank and edward. We now find out that sybils real father wasnt thomas arthur straw but a man called george cardwell and that vivienne had also a boy to him that she adopted out. Im under the assumption that it could be around about 1930 and that it may line up with another straw born, that i cant place called donald c straw

To make things even more complicated i have been searching the marriage records and i find that thomas arthur straw married a ivy b jones in 1921. Would this be the same man as my grandfather who married viviene m m jones in 1926??

Id also like to ask if scruffyones has any relation to the straws. Any information would be great

GRAY was used by my grandmother as her step father was a Richard GRAY. I dont really have information on him or where his family was from. All i know is that he had a brother THOMAS and his mother was Ida PAYNE. and that Ida and Thomas lived up at Anna Plains.
