Interested in locating information on Aldis Steadman and wife Ethel Rebecca. He died June 1968, resided in Devon, Ft. Scott, Hiattville and Pawnee Station in Bourbon Co. Would appreciate any street addresses, census lookups, cemetery or burial information.

Thank you for any help.

Carolyn, in Florida

I have a great uncle, Steadman Aldis, born in 1879, died about 1968. He lived in Fort Scott, Kansas much of his life, after emigrating from England. His wife's maiden name was Ethel Fry. This seems like too many coincidences not to be the same person as your Aldis Steadman. Are you sure Steadman was his surname?

I found a Steadman Aldis in the 1900 census in Stafford County, KS. Born 1879, England, parents both born in England. He is living with the Albert Shoop family as a servent. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1899. He is in Albano Township, page 268. His name is not spelled correctly on the index - it is spelled Steashmar. Sorry, but I don't have access to an indexed census after 1900.

Hi Carolyn,
I've just started researching my family and came across this older post of yours. My great aunt Ethel Fry married Rev. Steadman Aldis and resided in Kansas until he died in 1968. According to the following site he was a methodist minister serving in Kansas and as a missionary in India 1912-30.

I also found a possible reference to his meeting Gandhi
while in India at this religion forum:

Ethel Fry was one of the 10 children of Alvin Henry Fry who was born in Jefferson County, IN and died in Emporia, Lyon, KS. One of her younger brothers Laurel Delos was my grandfather. The family appears in several US and Kansas censuses where the men worked at the large railroad roundhouse in Emporia only 2 blocks from their home on Pine St.

Unfortunately, my grandfather died in 1918 and I never met Aunt Ethel in person although my father had mentioned her.

I would like to see any photos or additional information about the family.

Steadman Aldis is my great-grandfather. His youngest son, William, is my grandfather, who is still living. Are you still looking for information about Steadman Aldis?

If anybody is still interested in Steadman Aldis and his wife Ethel Fry Aldis, let me know- they were my grandparents, and lived for many years after their retirement in Fort Scott, Kansas with their three physician children Drs. John, Henry, and William Aldis. Henry Aldis was my father. Steadman and Ethel Aldis's work in India was truly revolutionary. In the early 1900's they were doing integrated community development of a kind that many 'development experts' today are just beginning to understand. It was the wonderful stories of their life and work in India which set me on a path to work with WHO in India, as well as many other countries in Asia and Africa.
