It is not very readable, can someone help me out with an other copy as I believe someone saw an old query of mine and sent this to me. I am looking for my Grt. Grandfather with his Father and Mother, his fathers name is Oran Dey Rogers , his mothers name Sarah Meggs. Thank you, Email me if more info is required .

Hi Don,
In case you don't have the 1871 Census Index (not the detail) but here is the Index information:
Federal Census of 1871 (Ontario Index)
ROGERS , ORAN
Sex: Male
Age: 34
Birthplace: ONTARIO
Religion: Wesleyan Methodist
Origin: ENGLISH
Occupation: BLACKSMITH
District: LEEDS SOUTH ( 067 )
Sub-district: Gananoque Village ( B )
Page: 84
Microfilm reel: C-10,001
Reference: RG31 — Statistics Canada

However, I do have the 1881 Canadian Federal Census:
Census Place: Leeds Front, LEEDS South, Ontario, Canada
Source: FHL Film 1375868 NAC C-13232 Dist 110 SubDist C Page 4 Family 16
Sex Marr Age Origin Birthplace
Oran Day ROGERS M M 38 Irish O <Ontario>
Occ: Blscksmith Religion: E. Methodist
Sarah ROGERS F M 37 English O <Ontario>
Religion: Weslyan Methodist
Herbert ROGERS M 15 Irish O <Ontario>
Religion: Weslyan Methodist
Annie ROGERS F 13 Irish O <Ontario>
Religion: Weslyan Methodist
Sarah Jane ROGERS F 10 Irish O <Ontario>
Religion: Weslyan Methodist
Oda ROGERS M 9 Irish O <Ontario>
Religion: Weslyan Methodist
Joseph ROGERS M 7 Irish O <Ontario>
Religion: Weslyan Methodist
Abraham ROGERS M 3 Irish O <Ontario>
Religion: Weslyan Methodist

Interesting that the 1871 Census shows his origin as ENGLISH while 1881 says Irish?

Hope this helps?
Jim

You can look at the census index on several sites ie Canada Archives. I just put in Rogers and Gananoque. Oran was a 34 year old blacksmith.
Cheers

I am looking for Oran Day Rogers, b. 1837, too. I have found a transcription of a cemetery tombstone that has "Herbert W. Rogers, son of O.D. and Sarah Meits, 1866-1948." This tombstone is located in Wellesley Cemetery in NY, US. I'm thinking "Meits" (or Meggs) might really be Mattice.

I also found the 1891 Canadian census in the Leeds South area that says that Oran Day Rogers (b. 1837) father was from the US and the mother was from England. I have also seen census reports that says he was born in 1843. I've also seen Oran spelled as Oren, Orin, Orrin, Orion, Orian, Oda (for O.Day) and Warren. I've also found Rogers spelled Rodgers, Roggers, Rogerson.

I have found an Oren D. Rogers born 1872, Ontario, son of Oran Day Rogers born 1837. Oren D. Rogers b. 1872 is brother to Herbert W. Rogers b. 1866. On a census report in either 1900 or 1910, I found Herbert lived next door to Oren D. Rogers b. 1872. (They were living in either Jefferson County, NY or St. Lawrence County, NY--I forget which.)

I have found that for most of their adult lives, Oran Day Rogers, b. 1837 and Sarah Meits/Mattice/Meggs lived in Escott or Leeds South or Ganaoque.

I'm not sure if the border between Ontario and Quebec changed in the 1800-1872 timeframe, but sometimes Leeds and/or Gananoque is listed as Quebec and sometimes it's listed as Ontario, but always it's listed as Leeds which must have been a county in those days. Either way, I can't search for Leeds as a county in databases I am researching.

I am completely unable to find a birth, marriage or death record for either Oran Day Rogers born 1837; or a birth, death or marriage record for Sarah Meits/Meggs/Mattice/Metis b. about 1839, in all of Ontario.

Is there any record of a fire or other such thing that could have resulted in a loss of b/m/d/bur records in Leeds? I can find them on Canadian censuses but nowhere else. Any help on these two as to where to look for their birth or marriage or death or burial information would be extremely appreciated. Mostly, I'm trying to find who their parents were so I can continue the search back in time. Thank you.

The death of Sarah Rogers (Mrs. O. D. Rogers) is reported in the January 4, 1890 issue of the Gananoque Reporter. You can see the index at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~onleedsg/docs/gr_bmd.htm. The death of Orin Rogers is reported on April 7, 1894. The Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid lists a Sarah Rogers buried in Gananoque Cemetery and another buried in Lansdowne Cemetery.

Chris and Keith--Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!! We're going to visit Gananoque this summer to find these gravestones and see the area for ourselves. I saw so many other Rogers' from the link that were OD and Sarah's children. PLUS I have death dates of the two of them thanks to you!! Now I can search out the name "Meggs", too. (I was way off with Meits and Mettis.) So much to fill in on the family tree!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!

Hi There; well I first want to thank all that answered my query of some time ago.Sorry I have not answered you all but I have been under the weather since then an now I have just started to want toget back into things . First of all I am a great grand son of this Roger family line I never did meet Grampa Oran but I lived with his #1 son Charles Thomas Rogers, b 2-15-1860, d 2-10-1937 and Catherine Kate (Boddy) Rogers,2-05-1861 d 4-30-36 . they had 11 children. At present I do have an Email dated I-25-1998 from a Lynda Rogers wife of David A. Rogers son of Oran Day (Raymond) Rogers.& Lavine Chayne Rogers. He never did go by Orin but used the name Raymond. Now this David I understand had a Marina in Waterdown N.Y. I think there were 7 children in his family. Maybe you have this material but I do have some more on the Meggs as well as some pictures regards DJ.

Glad to hear from you these many years after your original post. Will be in touch. I'm showing this to my husband who is also a descendant. So many names it's too hard to write in this forum. I'm clarifying some of this with him as he is familiar with the names of Oran Rogers Jr's (b. 1872) children, who they married and most of their children's names. Didn't know the Meggs connection until writing in here to this board. I'm interested in anything you are willing to share on the Meggs or Rogers' and we'll share photos of headstones, etc. with you. Thanks for responding! I don't like to give out my email address on a public posting but I appreciate that you gave yours. Will write soon.
