I am looking for the burial place/cemetery for Joseph Markham and his wife Ingeborg (Belle) Brenden Markham. Death notices indicate the bodies were taken to Bemidji (where they once lived). I do not find them at the Find a Grave website.Thank you to any help you can give me.

Need death date and state they died in; did they have anything to do with hotels? Famous Bemidji hotel was Markham's. Do you have death certificates, they may give name of cemetery; if not, the name of mortuary. It would have a record of which mortuary in Beltrami County they were removed to for burial.

Joseph Markham's death notice which was published in the Duluth News Tribune states he died in Hot Springs, no state given, but gives Bemidji, MN as the location of the news. It says a public funeral was held at the city hall. He died 24 Sep 1905.

Belle Markham, published in the same paper states she died at St Mary's Hospital, the body was taken to Bemidji, MN. and people would be attending the funeral at Bemidji, MN. She died 26 Aug 1914.

They lived in Bemidji when the ran the Markham Hotel and after Joseph's death she moved to Virginia, MN where she ran the Fay Hotel. They had at least one son, named Walter.
Thank you

I went to the Bemidji Library and found that J.Markhan is buried in Bemidji at the Greenwood Cemetery. He is buried in Or A. The original cemetery section A. It doesn't say anything about Belle. The book I looked at was one transcribed by volunteers so Belle may have been overlooked. I have not been to the cemetery to look. At the library there is an obit for Walter's wife who died in 2010. If you would like I can go and transcribe it for you.

Also, in the book "Bemidji First City On the Mississippi" 1896-1996 Bemidji Centennial there is a little on Joseph Markham. It says "...Bixby invited Joseph M. Markham, a Minnesota legislator from St. Hilaire, and convinced him that the village of Bemidji needed a fine new hotel like Markham had built in Crookston."

Hope this helps. I will try to get to the cemetery and see if I can find Joseph and Belle.

I'm sorry, I gave you wrong information. The obit was for George's wife who died in 2002.

Here is the obituary from The Bemidji Pioneer, November 27, 2002.

PHILOMENE MARKHAM

Philomene Irene Markham, 90, of Walker died Monday Nov. 25, 2002 at the Woodrest Health Care Center in Walker.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Red Lake, with the Rev. Pat Sullivan officiating. A wake begins at 4 p.m. Friday in the Little Rock Community Center at Red Lake. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Red Lake, with arrangements by the Olson-Schartz Funeral Home of Bemidji.

She was born July 18, 1912, in White Earth to Joe and Angeline (Redbird) Bellanger. She grew up in Elbow Lake, Minn. And attended school in White Earth.

She married George Markham in 1938 in Red Lake, and they lived in Redby. After the death of her husband, she moved to Bemidji where she lived for several years. In 1984 she moved to Walker and had lived there since.

She enjoyed photograph, pictures, gardening and flowers.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and four sisters.

I thank you again, although those words do not seem to adequately describe my appreciation for the information and picture. I believe George was a cousin of Walter.

Interesting that only J M Markham is on the tombstone. Could Belle be buried there too or somewhere else in Bemidji? Another mystery to solve....

Belle might be there. I was going to stop at the office to see but there was a burial going on and I didn't want to bother anyone. Maybe I can stop in next week. Good luck with your research.
