Let me know, there is a good chance we are connected. I always suspected my gm may have been from the area. There were several McIntyres on the List of Penang Jurors 1904 I first found him on.

My gf was from Ireland, taught in Penang Free School from 1892–1926. My gf was born in Penang and likely all of his siblings. I have no idea where they retired to.

A lot of the material is in Singapore with some material accessible in Australia, it seems. However, I am in Canada, where are you?

Try to locate the "Who's Who in Malaysia", The Blue Book(?) and the Straits Directories (various names for different years). Also the Straits Times newspapers. So far i have not found anything online except for some of the directories.

Hello,

I am researching my ancestors who were living and working in Sarawak, Singapore and Penang at various times between 1850's and 1942. My g-g uncle was Joshua Lingard, a trader born in the UK, who died in Penang in 1915 and reportedly married a Thai woman. If you have come across this surname in your research, please let me know.

Also, I am aware that census' were conducted in Singapore and maybe for the whole Straits Settlements from the 1870's. Do you know how to access these records?

Thanks

Looking in the 1935 & 1940 Singapore & Malayan Directories:

In 1935: H. LINGARD Borneo Co.Ltd, Chieng Mai, Thailand and
W. LINGARD Rengeng Tin NL, Phuket, Thailand

In 1940: M.R.L. LINGARD Padaj Valley Estate, Tenom Rubber Estates Ltd, Beaufort, British North Borneo

..perhaps the next generation?

best wishes

Thankyou so much for your reply. I really appreciate your help. Will look into this.

Are the Singapore & Malayan Directories available online?

Cheers

No, unfortunately they are not online. I have the 1935 & 1940 ones. Singapore National Library's Reference Library have a wider collection of them and they would probably do 'look ups' for you.

I have found a few directories at various spots on the internet, I believe one spot was the Singapore Library. They were free but they take a while to download even on broadband. And the name changes with each publication.

I have 1870, 1877, 1879 and 1881, I have been looking for any years between 1892 - 1926. If you run across those please let me know, I am searching for my great grandfather, William Hamilton, schoolmaster at Penang Free School.

Sorry, I only found one reference:

Straits Calendar and Directory (including Sarawak and Labuan) for the Year 1870 –– Nothing
____
The Singapore Directory for the Straits Settlements 1877 –– Nothing
____
The Singapore Directory for the Straits Settlements 1879
Pg 29
Lingard, master & owner, British barque, West Indian
Lingard, J., mate, bargue, do
____
The Singapore and Straits Directory for 1881 containing also Directories for Sarawak, Labuan, Siam, Johore, and the Protected Native States of the Malay Peninsula -– Nothing

Let me know if they are able to search for you. I had been considering that as well.

Please let me know if you run across any from 1882 - 1928, I haven't yet.

Good luck in your search.
