I have researched an ancestor who was a Texas Frontier Ranger and was assigned to Camp Colorado, Camp Pecan and Camp Colorado in Texas during the Civil War. Does anyone have a picture of any of these camps. I would like to add it to my documentation of his service.

I've done some research on military posts in that area of West Texas and can tell you that Camp Colorado was in Coleman Co. (maybe designated as Brown co. c. 1860-can't remember) and that there is/was a historical marker back in the 1960's--may still be there. Also a cemetery as I recall. Check the Handbook of Texas Online for more specifics. When I was last there c. 1961 there were stone buildings (one or two) on private property. Don't know what is left today
I think Camp Pecan probably refers to a temporary encampment on Pecan Bayou, a wet weather wash about 10-15 miles west of Coleman, which was a major war/buffalo/migration trail for the Comanche Indians. I seriously doubt there is any surviving archeological structure there, even if one could find the general location--which I doubt. Tents most likely since there was little if any wood for jacales, and not permanent enough for pick up rocks to cobble together a building.
Keep us posted on what you find.

I made a short trip to the Texas State Library in Austin last year and copied muster rolls and some general correspondence on my ancestor Lt/Capt. William Franklin Robison, Texas Ranger. I was so excited to find info on him, and since it was only a 2 day trip, I did not think to research the Camp itself. However, I did copy the quarterly report from Commander Norris from April 1862 which spoke to their lack of supplies, weapons, ammunition, food etc.
