The photos that were copied by others, prior to your tree being made private, are forever public.

. . . and, since they originally came from your tree, they will always be listed (in notices to you) as "from your tree" or words to that effect, even though the person who copied them found them on a secondary source (another tree). No need to be alarmed about it.

It's not explained in the knowledge base.

Merely making one's tree Private does not prevent folks from searching and obtaining certain information from a Private tree. If you will, go to your "preferences" page where you clicked to make your tree Private, scroll down a bit on that page, and also check the block to make your tree "unsearchable." That way none of your information will appear in any member search henceforth. As the others have said, what was obtained when your tree was Public cannot be recalled.

I made my tree private to keep it off of Mundia.com and for that reason only. I would like others to contact me and so I want my tree to come up in a search and at least allow the possibility of others contacting me for information they may not possess.

I agree. My tree is private but searchable, for the same reason. I have been contacted by many people over the time I have had a tree (previously public) who had ancestors in common (and in some instances, had and shared many photographs, as well as letters and other documents). I would have missed all of that if they had not known at least some information, and I in turn want to be able to share with others - but in a controlled setting.

Photos in private trees are indexed too, by the full title you gave it, who it's attached to, the location and date, if those are details you entered. About the only thing that's not shown is the photo.

The only way to prevent photos or any media attached to a tree from showing in the index, is to tick the box that prevents the tree from being indexed. It's all or nothing

Is this a good place to mention my pet peeve? And it is...people with private trees who save pictures and stories from my public tree, but never say "howdy." They just nibble, nibble, then scamper back to Privatelandia.
