Surnames: Pantzikis, Pantziki, Panzikis, Pantziker, Pantzikes, Pentzikis, Adalis
Looking for any information relating to the Pantzikis family from Avenue B, Weirton (c1920). Family members are John Pantzikis (Father), Helen Pantzikis (Mother), Stasia Pantzikis (Daughter). Also Peter Pantzikis (Brother of John). John and Peter worked at Weirton Steel Company around 1940. Spelling of surname sometimes varies, includes Pantziki, Panzikis, Pantziker,Pantzikes, Pentzikis in some records.
Also seeking information on the Adalis Family of Terrace Circle, Weirton (relatives of the Pantzikis family). Head of family Constantine Adalis.

Thanks for responding.

I mainly have information on the Pantzikis name in Australia/Greece, however as per my post am trying to locate the Pantzikis name in the USA. The name (along with Adalis) first appeared in Weirton, Hancock in the early 1900's after leaving Asia-Minor (where the name originates).
Are you from the USA or elsewhere? Would like to hear what relatives you have information on.

I found two listings for Adalist.
The first one is Mary Irene Adalist,
770 Welsh Rd
Huntingdon Valley, pa 19006
phone # 215-938-0490

The second one is:
Ann Adalist-Estrin
100 Webster Ave
cheltenham, Pa 19012
phone # 215-576-1473

The address are close to Philedelphia, Pennasylvania.
If the family worked in the Weirton Steel that company might have some infor on them, of course what is left of Weirton Steel is now Mittal Steel. At the time that you mentioned Weirton had a lot of ethnic neighborhoods,ie greek, italian, russian. Most of the families stayed in the area because Weirton Steel provided a good income. In the 1980's a lot of the younger ones left to find work in other places like in Texas, California, and Virginia. Families in the 1940's sometimes moved between West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. You might try looking into two cemetaries in Weirton, Three springs cemetary( an old cemetary) and Chappell Hill Cemetary(had sections for greek and russian and slovaks). I hope this helps.

If there were burials of this family in the early 1900s, the most logical cemetery would be Paris Cemetery in Washington Co., PA. Many ethnic burials of upper Weirton are located there (my family included). This cemetery borders the eastern part Weirton along Old US 22. There are also Greek Sections in Chapel Hill, Weirton; and Chestnut Hill Cemetery further into PA and along Old US 22.

Thank you v g butler and Krootie for your advice and info. Unfortunately I am in Australia so will have to wait until i'm in the US to search further. But know i can pinpoint it a bit easier so thanks again. Are both of you either aware of Greeks or other ethnicities changing or anglicising their surnames as i'm having trouble finding the Pantzikis surname anywhere at all on phone directories etc. Also does that explain the Adalist surname?? I've run out of options on finding the Pantzikis surname any further advice would be greatly appreciated (especially online searches). Thank you

Even if you live afar - I'd suggest using a membership with Ancestry.com and looking through the US Census for their spelling variations. (All researchers suffer from this regular occurrence). These are also 1st rate documents - and you could also seek their Social Security Applications which often supply country/city of origin and parents. These searches do cost - but you are more or less guaranteed success and will find other avenues with siblings.

You are very welcome.
I found a bunch of listings for the last name of Adalis. Most of them are in the state of Florida. One of the older folks is Stavros Adalis in Plantation, Florida. I didn't have time to look up a number. Other names were Micheal, Julio,Suero Adalis.
There is a Greek church in Weirton and I believe it is on West Street. The Greek community is very active with their chuch and in the community in general. With the loss of the jobs in the steel mill a lot of the kids had to go to other places for work and now their elderly parents have moved in with them. The town has lost a lot of it's population since the mill went down. The end of town where Avenue B is has very few houses left. It was part of the original section of town and over time the mill bought out a lot of the property so it has a lot of industrial look to it. There is a small history book called the History of Hancock County. It might give you a look at when the mill was started which I believe is 1919. The book has a lot of old pictures of what the town looked like at that time. If I can find the email address to the small history museum in town then I will send it to you. I hope this helps.

Thank you once again.

Chris,
I believe I have some good news for you. I talked to Pam Makricosta at the Weirton Library and I think she is the one you need to contact. She recognizes the Panzikis family name and the Adalis and she believes she has a living person that either knew the families or are related to the families. She mentioned John Pandelios as a contact for the Adalis name and Mary Vanezalos as a contact for Panzikis name. She may even be related. She said a lot of families moved to Baltimore; so many that they have a reunion up there. I talked to her by phone around Nov. 15. She sounded excited. Tell her Vanessa talked to her about the names you are inquiring about. Her email address is: makricos@weirton.lib.wv.us
I'm excited. Please let me know if she was able to help you out. Hey I even looked at a picture of Avenue B that was taken around 1910 or 1920. Wow. This picture was at the museum, which is in its infancy. They are now part of the Visitors' Bureau and are trying to get reorganized. The museum still does not have a pernament home. Sorry it took me so long to get back to you.
Thanks,
Vanessa
