Searching for Miss Smith

This is a long shot but...

I am looking for information on the birth mother of my Grandmother Annie Hazeldine. My grandmother was born 18/11/1914 in Westport, to an unmarried woman, whom I believe to be a Miss Smith. The man she eventually married did not want Annie, so she went to her natural father James Hazeldine and his wife Elida nee Curtis and was adopted by them in 1922.

Miss Smith married, moved to Balclutha and died of cancer in the early to mid 1960's, and possible had 4 more children. Before she died she visited my grandmother, then married to Ernie Thomas with 5 children herself, at the family farm in Kotuku on the West Coast.

My aunt cannot remember the married name, though it may start with H?

Does this story ring any bells with anyone who could help me with my search?

There are no Ernie Thomas being mairried in NZ between 1836-1956. There are quite a few Ernest THOMAS being married....
This is the only one I found that married a SMITH.

Thanks for looking at this for me.

It was Annie (my nana) who was married to Ernest Thomas, rather than her mother.

Since I posted this message there has been more digging by the family, and we now believe that the Smith name was in error. I have now been given a different name to look at. The search continues....

I am probable going to have to bite the bullet, pay Internal Affairs the $80 for them to research the death of the birth parents, and hope they find something, to allow me the original birth certificate. Otherwise I will look at the family court to see if I can inspect the adoption papers.

Wouldn't the mothers name be on her birth certificate ?

Yes, but Internal Affairs won't give me her original birth certificate, unless I can prove deaths of all concerned, or pay for them to research. As I am not sure of her mothers name, or whether or no there is a father listed on her original birth certificate, it is difficult to research her death. For $80 they willl look for the natural parents deaths, but if they can't locate the records, I am still no better off.

The birth certificate I have only gives the adopting parents names.

Adoption really complicated things....

Hi, I remember Aunty Annie and Uncle Ernie well. My Dad was Aunty Anne's half bother. We were under the impression that Aunty Anne's natural mother's last name was either Eatwell, or Skilton. The names came up many times during our childhood. I have wonderful memories of staying on the farm during school holidays. I would love to have contact with Beverly again. My e-mail is: stonefarm@tasman.net
I have been in touch with Judi Buckley who is Jimmy's daughter.
Cheers

Hi, sorry for the delay in responding, I have been away all week ad not able to access my email.

I will send you a email to your other address with a phone number for Aunty Bev.

There are so many stories as to the name of nanas mother. She was definately born Annie Skelton, but we don't think her mothers name was Skelton. I have been told Smith, more recently Baker, but I have found information that makes me doubt this as well. This is the first time I have heard Eatwell, so I will look at this.

I am going to sort the paperwork this weekend to reapply for Nanas birth certificate. Hopefully Internal affairs will be able to trace her natural parent(s) deaths, so they will release it.

Cheers

Hi Sophie,
I have some Hazeldine/Thomas connections from Westport and Denniston. I am wondering if there is a connection somewhere...
My link is Benjamin Thomas Jnr who married a Sarah Hazeldine. Also my GGG Grandmother was Mary Ann Thomas, and after the death of her husband she married a Thomas Hazeldine in Westport.
Ay links?
