I don't know what happened but I am going to do some research and I will post it here. I wish my grandmother was alive as she lived in McCamey (Upton County) during this time and I am sure she would know.

Dan,

Just saw your question regarding the circumstances of Graham Barnett's murder in Rankin. Joe Graham Barnett was my grandfather. First, I would like to say I am interested in any feedback you got from your request. I have just started researching my grandfather's life and any info would be appreicated.

My grandfather was murdered by Sherrif Fowler, I can get his full name, don't have it in front of me know. He was killed with his own machine gun, Fowler had wanted to buy it, but had not paid for it. Graham had given it to him some monthw earlier, before his death, and happened to be in Rankin, and wanted to collect his money. He was having his car serviced at a gas station and as he walked either to or from the car Fowler called his name and gunned him down. Fowler believed Graham was after him for the money, so he would kill him first. That is the shor version as I understand it.

I am curious why you are interested, if you don't mind. I would be happy to share things I have learned thus far.

Sincerely,

John Barnett

Dan,

I sent a reply a couple of years ago to this. Graham Barnett was my grandfather. I have learned a bit in the last two years about his murder if you are still interested.

If I may ask, why are you interested in the murder ?

HELLO: IN REGARDS TO THE GRAHAM BARNETT DEATH, THE WAY I HEARD IT WAS GRAHAM WAS GUNNING FOR SHERIFF FOWLER AND WAS JUST TOO SLOW TO REACT AND WAS SHOT TO DEATH LAWFULLY. THE THOMPSON MACHINE GUN THAT I KNOW ABOUT (STILL USED BY THE UPTON COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE) NEVER BELONGED TO BARNETT. FOWLER WAS TRIED AND AQUITED IN A COURT OF LAW AND EXHONORATED OF THE KILLING. IT WAS A CASE OF KILL OR BE KILLED.
FROM WHAT I HAVE HEARD THAT BOTH WERE SO CALLED FRIENDS BEFORE THIS BUT A FALLING OUT CAME ABOUT AND I DO NOT KNOW WHY. I TOO WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THIS AS I HAVE BEEN TO THE COURT HOUSE AND HAVE SEEN THE THOMPSON MACHINE GUN USED IN THE SHOOTING. I COULD HAVE KEPT IT BUT DECIDED NOT TO AS IT WAS MY GRANDFATHER'S SHERIFF W. C. FOWLER...

Mr. Fowler,

First, let me say, that in the last three years since my first posting on the boards regarding my grandfather, Graham Barnett, I have learned a lot more regarding the circumstances of the shooting in Rankin in Dec 1931.

I now know, as you said, that Graham Barnett was indeed looking to get Sheriff Fowler, they were friends at one time for several years, but had a falling out. Fowler was exonerated in court, and it really was "kill or be killed", in fact, as your grandfather said in court. (as per the court record). Why the falling out, is not clear. Sheriff Fowler and Graham had met the day before the shooting in private to discuss business. It is reported in three different manuscipts, and newpaper articles I now have, that a year before, Barnett had sold or given Fowler a sub-machine gun which had not been fully paid for or for which there was disagreement on the business arrangement they had made. Also, it is noted that there may have been two machine guns that Fowler had, which were similar makes, one owned by Upton Sheriff's department, the other one Barnett had given or sold Fowler. In all three manuscripts it is reported that the machine gun used was the one given by Graham.

The three manuscripts I have are;

1. Unpublished biography of Graham from Sept. 1958 entitled,

"Graham Barnett: 20th Century Cowboy Gunfighter Holdover From Another Era," by Russel M. Drake, who was a resident of San Angelo at the time.

2. Unpublished biography of Graham from around 1985 entitled,

"Graham Barnett: A Big Bend Shootist,"

I thought this was authored by the late Professor Joe S. Graham, Jr. of Texas A&M, but I am now not sure. I will resolve this hopefully soon.

3. Journal article from the Journal of Western Folklore, Vol. 24, No.2, April 1965, entitled,

"The Ballad of Graham Barnett, Badman of the Big Bend in Texas," by the late Professor John Q. Anderson, Texas A&M.

I am continuing to research this and would be happy to share what I have if you are interested, and of course, I am interested in any materials you may have.

Regards,

John Barnett

In my last reply I was not sure of the author of the second reference:

2. Unpublished biography of Graham from around 1985 entitled,

"Graham Barnett: A Big Bend Shootist,"

I thought this was authored by the late Professor Joe S. Graham, Jr. of Texas A&M, but I am now not sure. I will resolve this hopefully soon.

I have resolved it, the author was Elton Miles, Emiritus Professor Saul Ross Univeristy, Alpine TX
