Does anybody have any information about an old church that once stood along side the Ed Bishop Road? It used to stand on the north side of the road about 1/4 mile from SR257. There is an old cemetery right across the road from this location. A cemetery that has just been located after many years of being hidden by undergrowth.

Hello Aaron. I do not know too much about this cemetery. My GG Grandfather is buried there, and he is the only one there with a headstone. His headstone was put there about 30 years after his death! It is also the wrong headstone!! It's a long story, but the wrong headstone was placed there in the earlier part of this century, and I am having it replaced this Spring. This part might interest you a little. When we prepare for the replacement, I am having a person go to the cemetery, and mark all the graves. They have a special thing they do where they can locate the graves. They will then mark both ends (head & feet) of each grave. After that is done, we will then know just how big the cemetery is, and section it off with a fence or something. Do you and your grandmother live around there? When was the last time you visited the cemetery? Would you like to attend the ceremony when the marker is replaced? He was a Civil War vet, and it is going to be done with full Confederate honors!! There aren't too many people buried there. About 30 or so. I wonder if your family knew my family back then? Who knows. Anyway, please get back to me. John

My Greatgrand mother is burried in this cemetary in Jefferson County. She is in one of the two unmarked graves with a tree beside it. She died when my Grandmother was 4 years old, her married name was Sparks. My grandmother in now 80 years old, and would love dearly to figure out which grave is her mothers, so we can put a marker on it. Tho old church burned down, and all records there were destroyed. PLEASE EMAIL ME WITH ANY INFORMATION YOU MAY HAVE. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.

Your reference to the Aucilla Churchyard Cemetery and that of John White's has me puzzled. There may have been an old cemetery as John White indicated, located in a settlement near Aucilla, Fl, called the BISHOP WOODS. This church may have burned and the cemetery, deserted, neglected, run down, etc. The two main cemeteries in this entire area are named, Emery Cemetery and the Bishop Cemetery, which are well maintained and beautiful, rural, burial places. The Bishop Cemetery oldest plot is the George Bishop, b 1785, d 1860. He was my G-G-Grandfather. Most of my ancestors are buried there. I visited there on last Sat. 5-6-2000. Have seen nothing of the surname: Kersey in those two cemeteries.

What happened to the plan to mark and fence the Cem ?
|
I wrote the owner years ago with no response. I asked to either grant the land to the city of Aucilla or to an individual, or to sell it. I have no idea who the owner is any longer, but it may be worth another try.

I don't believe it is the Bishop Cemetery. The only headstone is that of my G G Grandfather. All of the other graves are unmarked and overgrown. This needs more research.
