I am researching the parents of Homer Brice Brown. His father was William J. Brown, b. 12/16/185?, married to Sallie Ann Courtney/Coatney, b. 10/2/1868, d. 1964. I know they lived at one time in Holmes Co. I need any information on this family. I know that William J. Brown was brother to the father of the famous cowboy/actor, Johnny Mack Brown. Thanks in advance for your help! :)

Sallie Ann Coatney may have been sister to my Great Grandfather William Isaac Coatney (Courtney) born in Holmes County married to Mary Ann Carter.

How have you come to that conclusion? I have had very little luck finding info on her family, although, I have wondered if her name could have been Coatney and not Courtney as the family thinks. I would love to compare notes. Thanks!

I was told by my grandfather George Cleveland Courtney (born in Holmes Co.originally spelled Coatney) that his father William Issac Coatney , Holmes Co. Fl. had several sisters and brothers. Ellen and Lizzy were the ones he remembered ( he was old when he told me about them). When census records are checked it shows a family of Holmes Co. with a son named William and daughters named Elizabeth, Ellen and Sally. Seems like it might be something for you to explore. Their father was William J. Coatney, Holmes Co.
and their mother Mary Ann Carter, Holmes Co.

More info if you want it.

Wanda,
Excuse me wrong Grandma name . Mary Ann Carter was William Issac Coatney's wife not his mother.
His mother was Sarah Irene Johnson(?) called Rennie - was told that she was Cherokee.

Wanda,

More info as I was looking at my geneology notes.

I was told there was family history William Isaac Coatney's sister named Sally/Sallie being married first to Joe Roland who "killed a man" and her second husband was Will Brown.
If you want more info I will research with my other family members. As we were not working on the siblings of my GreatGrandfather Isaac at that time I just made a quick note of it. Just e-mail me at ladyjcp_28557@yahoo.com and we will go from there. Glad to help in anyway.

Do you know of any Coatney/Courtney who married William Logan Clark? He was my grandfather. My father Oscar Clark said his mother was a Coatney and he also said one of his relative married a Brown. He mentioned Otho Brown. William Logan was in the 1880 census in Dallas Co./Mo. He was also in Ozark Co. in an early census with his father and mother, William and Roda Clark and his brothers and sister. I would like to find out who my great.grandparent were. Thank you.

I am sorry but I have no more information on the Coatney/Brown family at this time. I will let you know if I run across anything. My family was from the Dothan, Alabama and Bonifay, Florida area. Most have moved from that area but there were some Courtney's (Coatney's) still in the phone books in Bonifay a few years ago. The spelling of the name Coatney to Courtney seemed to have changed after the Civil War or in the early part of the 20th century. This was most likely due to a change in the spelling on Civil War records by more literate officers who felt that My great great grandfather was saying Courtney with his very southern accent :) The Florida Civil War records show his wife's name with several spellings, such as Sarine instead of Sarah Irene. Census takers also changed the spelling of names to suit themselves.
Good Luck!

thank you very much. I think I have found one of my father's in Dallas Co. Mo. His name is Otho Brown. But I have not been able to find the connection between the Brown's and the Coatney's. It has been a problem to get names because my grandmother Clark who was Coatney was born after the 1880 census and was married and had children by the 1900 census. again thanks.

Surnames: COATNEY, JOHNSON, MILLER
Hope you are still "out there" after three years. There is an Arena Coatney buried in the Pleasant Grove Methodist Church Cemetery in Washington County, Florida. I recently surveyed this cemetery and saw the grave firsthand. I used an old (1958) survey to get the birth and death dates, since the marker is somewhat unreadable now. Arena's birth date was 6/10/1849 and she died 3/3/1921.

Is this your Susan Irene (Rennie) Johnson? What was her husband's name?

Also in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery is an Edward Miller, Sr. whose birthdate (8/12/1887) is approximatley the same as that of Elizabeth Coatney's husband. Buried in the same plot is Edward Miller, Jr,. (1921-1942) Do you know whether this Edward Miller Sr. was Elizabeth Coatney's husband?
