ANOTHER VETERAN OF CIVIL WAR FROM THIS COUNTY PASSES AWAY

Davis Hoch Dies at Home in Oliver Township at Age of 85 Years

FUNERAL SERVICES NEXT FRIDAY

David W. Hoch, one of the few remaining veterans of the Civil War in this county, died at his home in Oliver township this morning at the age of 85 years of a complication of diseases.

The deceased was born in Perry township and had lived on the farm where he died in Oliver township the past 60 years. He was a successful farmer and one of the most highly respected men in the county. When a young man he went with the Pennsylvania Volunteers and fought through the Civil War. He was married following the war and settled on the farm where he died. He was a member of St. John's Reformed church, a good, straightforward honest business man whose death is a great shock to his many friends in Jefferson county.

He is survived by the following daughters and sons: Mrs. Ellen Enterline, of Dayton; William D. Hoch, at home on the farm; Mrs. Andrew Lingenfelter, of Olean, N. Y.; Mrs. Raymond Campbell, of Brookville, and Mrs. August Miller, of Big Run.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon in St. John's Reformed church and interment made in St. John's cemetery.

I checked my records and David William Hoch, born 5 April 1838 in Perry Township, Jefferson County PA was the son of George and Judea (Schmidt/Smith) Hoch. George and Judea Hoch had two children, the first was David W. above, born in 1838. They also had a daughter named Matilda in early 1840. However, George was killed in an accident in late 1839,
before his daughter was born, while felling a tree.

Also, I don't have any info on Joseph B. Hoch or Jane Clark.

The info on my Hoch family came from a book called: Descendants of Rudolph Hoch and His Wife Veronica and Related Families, by Patricia L. Alford, published by Anunden Publishing Co. Rudolph Hoch came to this country in 1717 from Switzerland and was a Mennonite. I only photocopied
the pages that had my direct line as the book had over 170+ pages, but it will probably be of great help to you.

Thanks, but my Joseph Hoch is another line. His father Henry Hoch arrived about 1750, but I cannot get the exact ship yet. Others have told me they are not of the Rudolph Hoch line. Appreciate your help anyway.
Thank you

A photo of David William Hoch?

Does anyone know if a photo of this David exists, being that he died as late as 1923? He is a direct ancestor of mine through his daughter Margaret Sarah (Hoch) Lingenfelter, who is my Great Great Great Grandmother, and I would love to obtain a copy of any such photo. I have photos of Margaret, her sisters Minnie and Jennie and brother David William Hoch that I would be more than willing to share. If anyone is interested in swapping information about these people or has learned more about any of this specific Hoch family since these posts were originally put up, please feel free to leave a post and we'll get in contact as I would very much like that.
