Hello, I am hoping that someone might be able to point me in the right direction. I am trying to find names of possible Sanitariums or Insane Asylums for African Americans in 1920-1930 in OK.. My great great grandfather
Peter (Dock) Franklin dob 1876 TX., married to Amanda Hudson Franklin, found in 1920 census Logan Co. OK. Peter
sustained a head injury by a mule, placed in an Insane Asylum in OK., where he died before 1930. Since being place at Norman,OK was not an option where did they place AA? Would there have been a census taken? I am trying to locate a death certificate for Peter. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you Pat Crawford naomipc@msn.com

Pat, In checking the census for the Norman facility for 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 there were counted persons of color which were listed a 'blk' or 'n'. I expect that they were in a segregated wing or building as in one census they are listed separately but in the other census they are listed alphabetically with the white inmates/patients.

Thank you Fred. Now my next question would be, how would I find out if Peter Franklin was admitted there and died there between 1920 but before 1930? I think that if I can find a year of death or place of death, then I just might be able to locate a death certificate which might tell me where he is buried. Thanks again for responding, I do appreciate the infomation that you have shared with me . naomipc@msn.com

I grew up in North East Oklahoma. I think I remember there being an asylum in or near Miami, Oklahoma.

Fred, working with the information that you provided I was able to obtain a death certificate for Peter Dock Franklin it took just about a month and a half. He was in Central Okla. State Hospital. Ward F, his place of burial or removal was listed as Dept. Of Medicine. I am making the assumption that would mean that his body was used for medical research? Now how would I find out whatever happened to his remains? Again thank you Pat Crawford

I am just starting to try to find my husband's aunt who was in Central State Insane Asylum. Before her death, her sister told me that if I ever found anyone buried in the family plot except her parents they were to be moved! So no family records exist. After the sister's death, I received some information that I was able to track her death. Where do I look to find death certificate? I belong to Ancestry.com. Leo Jean Boyack born 1897 born Iowa.
thanks, sey
