Rome, passed away Saturday evening, May 16, 2009, in a local hospital.
Mr. Vance was born in
Jefferson County,
AL on February 22, 1925, son of the late William
Delph Vance, Sr. and the late Anna
Vines Vance. He was also preceded in death by 4 sisters and by 5 brothers. Prior to his retiring, he was employed with the Boilermaker's Local #454. A veteran of the United States
Navy, Mr. Vance served aboard the U. S. S. Bunch, as destroyer escort, in Okinawa during World War II. He was a member of the First Assembly of God here in
Rome, where he served as a
Deacon for over 20 years and an Adult Sunday School Class teacher.
Survivors include his wife, the former Martha Annette
Hays, to whom he was married on February 6, 1946; 3 daughters, Ms. Annette
Vance New,
Rome, Mrs. Becky
Vance Kinsey, and her husband,
Alton,
Lindale, and Mrs. Connie
Vance Aycock, and her husband, Todd, Rome; a son, Dennis W. Vance, Rome; 7 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive as well as many friends.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at 2pm at the First Assembly of God with his pastor, the Rev. Dave McLucus, the Rev. Phillip Wall, and the Rev. Bob
Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at
Henderson &
Sons Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 6 until 8pm. At other hours, they may be contacted at the residence.
Mr. Vance will be taken to the First Assembly of God on Wednesday to lie in state from 1pm until the funeral hour. Pallbearers are requested to assemble at the church Wednesday at 1:30pm and include the following grandsons: Tommy New, Ben
Kinsey,
Nick Kinsey, Tyler
Aycock, Jacob Allmon, Brandon New and Justin
Millsap. Men of the First Assembly of God will serve as honorary pallbearers.
