Hello,
I am needing info about the church records on the Island of Tjotta up by Mojsen. Pardon my spelling!
My family name is Larsen, we are from the Island Tjotta and my Great Uncles were priests for the church there. I have seen the Island and church and headstones. But am unable to find a contact person........uff da!! So I can get more concrete records of such information.

Any help you can give me would be wonderful. My great grandfather left the Island in the early 1900's. I have his memories all written down but they are in Norwegian!!!

Thank you for your help.

I see that your post is 9 years old but I know where the records are kept. They are kept in the town of Sandnessjoen,
in a community center type building in town. I went there to find records of my relatives who lived in Tjotta. I wish I had the name and phone number of that building. Maybe you could find a number trhough their city hall. If I find anymore info I will let you know.

You can read and use parish church records for Tjøtta online through the website of the Digitalarkivet. Tjøtta records for years from approximately 1841 to 1928 should be in that online collection. Earlier records for the area are probably included under the area of Alstahaug in Nordland.

The Digitalarkivet web site has been adding scanned images of the original Norwegian parish church records for anyone with Internet access since November 2005.

The Digitalarkivet web site - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&a...
An English option is available by clicking on that word from either the left hand column or the blue link bar along the bottom of the homepage.
The scanned images are available from the homepage link "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] which is listed along the left hand column and from the blue banner of links along the top section of the homepage.
After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records. The instructions are available in Bokmål (official Norwegian), Nyorsk (Norwegian), Davvisámegiella (Saami), and English.
Recommended basic reading are the "Startsiden" [Norwegian version]/"Main page" [English version], "Brukerveiledning" [Norwegian version]/"User's guide" [English version] and "Om tjenesten" [Norwegian version]/"About this service" [English version].

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -
