CLARK-DIGGINS-BENWAY-STEVENS

I am trying to find the place and date and possibly a burial for Adelphia CLARK. She has been recorded as Adelphia, Adeline, A. D., and variations of such. In 1900 she is in Chemung, McHenry County, Dwelling 141, Family 146 with her husband N. Clark, b. July 1832. In the 1910 Census, Nelson CLARK is listed as a widow and is living in McHenry County with his widowed brother Norman. Adelphia is a Diggins so it's quite possible she is buried in a Diggins plot. She was first married to Hiram Stevens, who died during CW and is buried in Chemung Cemetery. She then married Henry S. Benway in 1865 and was divorced in the 1880 census and then she married Nelson A. Clark in 1884. One lead was she died in Rock County, Wisc. possibly May 1901 but I haven't been able to find anything on that and just recently discovered she lived in Chemung. Any help or leads would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Mike Peterson

Michael,

I found her final resting place. She's buried in Jerome Cemetery in Dunham Township. Apparently, the cemetery itself rests partly on land that was patented by Alonzo C. Diggins in 1839.

Row H41
Lot 7-20

Clark, Adelpha Diggins mother d.5/14/1901 63y10m

I located this information in the book, McHenry County Illinois Cemeteries Vol. I: Northwest Townships, which was published by the McHenry County Illinois Genealogical Society (www.mcigs.org).

I will send you a photocopy of the relevant pages in a separate email.

Good luck with your research!

Thank you very very much for this info Kristen ! I have an aunt in her 80's who is going to be very happy with this knowledge. With the word 'mother' it makes me curious if any of her children, either STEVENS or BENWAYs ended up in McHenry. Thanks again Kristen for your research and time. It's very much appreciated.
Sincerely,
Mike Peterson

Thank you very much. Between the two of them, they had a few marriages going (grin). I'm going to add to my database. Would I use 'Ann Deline' as the source?
Thanks again,
Mike Peterson

I happened on these posts whie browsing.
I have a lot of Hollisters in my file & a very few Stevens &/or Stephen names.
Many of the Hollisters I don't have a lot of further info about other than their names & a few dates. I'd lost some of it when my file became corrupted.
Most of the Hollister info came from the Hollister Family of America.
My connections are distant ones to both Stevens & Hollister families but would be interested to know if Martha Hollister connects to any family I have as some who lived in Lake Co., IL & also in WI.

I also have a Jacob Stevens who was b. abt 1790 & died, 1869, at Cary Station as I recall. Somewhere around here I have a copy of the newspaper death notice but this & about 20 others have been lost for over a year.

Jacob had a son, Willard, who married, as his 2nd wife, Patience Electa Griswold.
She was b. 26 Mar 1846, Baraboo, Sauk Co., Wi & much younger than Willard, who was b. abt. 1814 in NH. Both died in & are buried in southern MI.
Willard & Electa Stevens had 2 daughters, Florence & Anna Belle.
Anna Belle m. Odell Conklin. She d. in McHenry Co.,11 Oct 1942.

I know very little about this Stevens family other than they came from NH & that Willard was an early settler of Barrington Station.
I do not know the name of Jacob's wife nor the maiden name of Willard's 1st wife, stated in an online file to have been Hannah, by whom he had at least 2 children. Hannah was stated to have died 24 Jun 1838. There may have been a marriage bet. Hannah & Electa as there is a child b. some time after Hannah had died but Electa had not even been born yet!

While I also have Clark family, the name is too common to even try to make connections I think.

I've been working for some time with Wauconda (Lake Co.) families buried in Wauconda & have connections to almost everyone buried there.
There appears to be at least 2 or 3 totally unrelated Clark families buried in that cemetery.
The Hollister family that distantly connects to my Pratt family is Lois Hollister who married Ebenezer Palmetier & both are buried in Wauconda.
Lois had at least 2 brothers. One didn't marry & lived in southern Wi. The other, Hiram, m. Sophronia Barrows & had at least 7 children.

Anyway, if anything sounds familiar I'd be grateful if someone could fill in some blanks & I'm willing to share what I have though e-mail as long as my computer keeps running.

Exs. Mary Hollister, Hiram Hollister.]

I just did a bit of searching in my FTM file, I have one Winchell...Stephen (b.2/23/1763) who married Rhoda Hollister. Obviously no relationship.
I have 3 Samuel Hollisters (b. 1812,1814 & 1817 all in NY) but none married to Winchell.
One of these, Samuel B., m. Sarah A. Hollister (dau. of Hiram & Sophronia (Barrows) Hollister. Samuel & Sarah had sons; Cyrus S., Arthur A., Storrs W. & Charles M., all b. in Wi but I found at least 2 of these sons in Juneau Co., WI 1860-1870. So I guess there's no relationship....at least not one that I can readily see at this time anyway.
