FREE RESEARCH IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Hi
I'm in Adelaide, South Aus. For about 8 years now I have been doing research for people all around the world who want information about ancestors who came here at some time, from our records.

I am posting this offer for anyone who would benefit from some information from our records. If so, just get back to me with your email address and I'd be happy to see what I can find on my next trip to the library. Please give me at least one or two Christian names as well as the surname to give me a start.

This is a genuine offer. I WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY RENUMERATION FOR DOING RESEARCH. It is a hobby which I love.

Regards
Heather

Heather:

Perhaps you can help.

One of my distant Victorian rellies married a man from South Australia, had one child in VIC – then disappeared from the Victorian indexes. Perhaps he moved back to SA, took her and the babe with him, and reared a family there:

Joseph WHITE, b. 25 Oct 1850, Adelaide, SA (per index ref: SA, Book 3, #124)

Married (per index ref: VIC 1878 #748 and #1307)

Mary Ann ADDISON, b. 1859, Beechworth, VIC (per image copy of birth record, index ref: VIC 1859 #10068)

One child:

Mary Ann WHITE, b. 1878, Fryerstown, VIC (per index ref: VIC 1878 #16112).

I’m only sure of Mary Ann ADDISON as I’ve traced her lineage down from our common ancestor in Cumberland, England (William MAUGHAN, Joseph MAUGHAN [emigrated to Victoria in 1852], Martha MAUGHAN, then Mary Ann ADDISON).

Hopefully, you'll be able to provide additional leads to this family. Note that I'm not in a big hurry just yet - I have a lot of folks from Mary Ann Addison's generation (her siblings and cousins) for whom I plan to obtain records first. I just thought I'd drop you a line while you are offering and I'm thinking about it.

Thanks a Bunch!

Hi Milt

I was in the Mortlock Library in Adelaide yesterday and had a look for information re Joseph White and family. I found the following, but I realise you may already have this information.

BIRTH.

Joseph White born 25th October 1850 in Adelaide, District Adelaide to Joseph White and Susan Meditation Brooke reference book 3 page 124

We have quite a large no. of records of people travelling by sea from South Australia around the coast to other Australian Sites. One of the places where many people go to from South Australia is Victoria (an ajoining State) so I looked through the records for anything on Joseph.

Unfortunately there is not even ONE record of a Joseph White and family going to Victoria, but there were several records for a Mr. J. White shipping from South Australia from 1852-1854.

These records are really not much more than Indexes. Most of the records just state Mr. & Mrs.........., or Mr. B. Brown...........etc. Very little other information is given.

But in saying this, someone in Victoria may be able to help with your research. They would be sure to have arrival records of people coming to South Australia from Victoria.

If you are not sure where to go for help, I suggest you put a request on the Rootsweb Message Boards, under Australia - Victoria. I have found people there to be most helpful in the past.

I hope this is of some help. Please feel free to get back to me if there is anything/anyone else you would like me to look for here in South Australia.

Regards
Heather

Hi Milt

I was in the library again yesterday (they will soon be putting in a bed for me I think!!) and found the following. I am presuming this woman is the mother of Joseph White Jnr. and wife of Joseph White Snr.

DEATH..

Susan White, aged 85 years of Georgetown, died 29th April 1899 at Georgetown, widow of Joseph White, District Clae. reference book 261 page 27.

I couldn't find a death record of Joseph White Snr. but according to the above, he died before 1899.

Feel free to get back to me if I can be of any further help.

Hello to you Heather,
I am following my grandmothers line at the moment.
Her Father Walter J A Hodgkinson wife Margaret Swatson.
They had a daughter Ruby E. Hodgkinson, born Sydney 4 Feb 1896. my grandmother. She married Leslie James Osmond. 26 March 1915.
Family oral history has told me that Margaret Swatson was born aboard ship on the way to Australia. They were coming from Germany.
There is no reference to a Swatson on the NSW BDM, could the family have put into Adelaide S.A. ?
I noted your interest in genealogy on the message board, and if you could fit this into your busy schedule I would be most grateful.
Kind Regards Stephen.

Hi Stephen
I have just read your email. I have made a note to look for your people when I get back to the Mortlock Library, which is in Adelaide, South Aus.

I usually go to the library every Friday (my day off work) but with Easter coming up, the library will be closed on friday, and not open again until Tuesday of next week. However, if you don't mind waiting a week or two I'll do my best to see if I can find information which may be of some help to you.

Regards
Heather

Hi

I have just read your reply to my offer for free research in South Australia. Unfortunately I only have access to records and information relating to South Australia - none for New South Wales.

Sorry I couldn't be of any help.

Regards
Heather
