Jacob married a Rebecca Wilhide Dec 7, 1835 according to Marriage Licenses of Frederick County Maryland 1811-1840 p. 189.

He's not listed in History of Frederick county, and there's no biographic sketch of a Pittinger that seems to go back any further then 1810 or so.

The Wilhide family though does seem to go back quite a ways to a Frederick Wilhide.

Thank you so much for the Rebecca Wilhide and Jacob Pittinger information..We did have Wilhide but thought maybe we were wrong since that was also as far as we were able to go. On the census's he lists both his parents as being from MD but that's where everything ends. We've been to the Burr Artz library and the Frederick Historical Soc. many times. Are considering going to the Archives in Annapolis MD as a last resort. It's as if his parents dropped out of sight..Seems that way..Would you have any suggestions to give us as to what to tackle next? Any help would be welcome..Again, thanks so much..Bradine Pittenger Meckley

I'm not sure what the archives might have, I don't do much there. However I don't know if you know that the Frederick Historical society has genealogical files and has both a Pittinger and Wilhide file.

I did find an obituary for Rebecca, but none for Jacob as he died two years before there was a newspaper in the area.

They are both buried at Unionville Methodist, which from Names in Stone is a larger cemetery, there might be a book on the cemetery. There is a collection of books on the German churches of the time, they may have something in it. Both the Frederick Library and Historical society should have them.

Other then that I can't think of anything off the top of my head as to where to look. The History of Frederick County might give a clue, but neither person is listed in it. There is a Jacob N Pittinger that's listed that might be a cousin or some other close relation.

Thank you so much for your help. Unfortunatly, we did see the files on Pittinger and Wilhide at the Frederick Historical Society. Also had a copy of Rebecca's obit and checked the German Churches books..Checked the Gettysburg Seminary too. Seems as if we've done everything we could but still no answer as to Jacob's parents..Which prevents us from tracing our roots past him..Our best bet will be the Archives and if we find nothing there we might consider a professional as a last resort..Kind of hate to do that but will if we have to..Thanks again. How about the probate records? There are a lot more probate records then wills. I was able to find a Smith that way, it does take a lot more work, but you might be able to find something.

There is also an index for the Maryland Genealogical Society books. It's basically the index cut out of each year worth of books, but there could be something there as well.

You might also want to recheck the historical society's files, they do get added to.

The probates are a bit strange if you haven't dealt with them before. They do it by first letter of the last name, then first letter of first name, then date of death. So all of the Pittengers would not be listed together and you'll have to look through all the 'P's, but you might get lucky.

I don't know what they may have in Baltimore, but at least they should have the indexes to look up.

Found a new direction at the Baltimore Historical Society..Am now looking for Johannes and Barbara Pittinger who had a son Jacob b.1/24/1809 and Bapt.6/4/1809 at Grace Evangelical Church (formerly St. Peters) in Woodsboro MD. Also had a son Andres Luety (or Andrew Levi) b.11/4/1816 Bapt.5/15/1817 in Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, also known as Haugh's Church or St. Paul. Hoping someone might have answers to these questions..Thanks so much. Bradine Pittenger Meckley
