I am researching the SHELTON surname in Jackson County, NC. Elias Coleman SHELTON was residing with his father Joseph "Joel" SHELTON and mother Mary CHASTAIN from 1850 - 1864 in or near Webster, Jackson County, NC. Elias was born Apr 15, 1846 in Cobb County, GA. Any information as to descendants and ancestors would be appreciated to include sibling information. Thanks and please email okiegirl24@aol.com

I also descend from the SHELTONS of Jackson Co. NC and can probably help you a little with your search. Most of the earliest data on our SHELTON line cannot be documented, but we have a lot of circumstantial evidence that helps us.

Your Joel is the brother of my Ellis SHELTON and also a full brother of William SHELTON Jr.. They are all three sons of William SHELTON Sr. and his first wife Mary Bates. They were originally from Greenville Co. SC and then later to Jackson Co. NC.

Hi Beau,

I saw your query where you stated you are descended from the SHELTONS of Jackson County. I am writing because I wonder if you know anything about my GREEN family.

My g-uncle James Elijah GREEN (b 1875) married Eva SHELTON (dau of Wm. Perry SHELTON/Ingaboo CONLEY).

James Elijah GREEN's father is my gg-grandfather Marion GREEN (5 Oct 1849) and Marion GREEN's father is James GREEN (b abt 1795 Burke Co., NC).

I know who Marion's brothers and sisters are, but nothing about James GREEN.

I know it is a long shot, but since you know about the SHELTONS, I wonder if you know about this GREEN family in Jackson Co. also.

Virginia Green WATSON (b Oct 1894) is a cousin of mine too.

Thank you very much, Beau, for looking into this.

Linda,

I don't know anything about your GREENs of Jackson Co. NC., but I know of another SHELTON researcher who is a descendant of your same line of Wm. Perry SHELTON and Ingaboo Conley. I will try to get you her snail mail address over the weekend.

Are Wm.Perry and Ingaboo the SHELTON couple who lived in the home at Waynesville that is now a museum, or did they live in SWAIN Co. NC?

I might be able to help you out with the Conley family if you're working on that line.

Preston (And Lucy Barron): I am Naomi Hooper Green, a native of Jackson Co., NC and a descendand of both Roderick Shelton and William Shelton. Roderick is the progenitor of the Madison Co., NC Sheltons (my maternal side). He came to Buncombe Co., NC (now Madison) in 1799 from VA. He was born in Patrick Co., VA.

I have William Shelton b. 1781 Hanover Co., VA. He was the son of John Shelton and Susannah Bradley. I descend from his son, Ellis Shelton, by his first wife, Mary (Polly) Bates. I have much information on both William and Roderick's descendants. I also own the book, The Sheltons of England and America, by Mildred Whitaker, which I purchased in the 60's and it has William and Mary in it. I also own three or 4 books on the Roderick Shelton descendants.

William does not have the word "Capt." on his tombstone.
I have been to the cemetery where he is buried a number of times and I have a photograph of his stone before me now.
It has a "cross" carved at the top of it. Here is the wording on it - "Billy Shelton Pioneer Settler". He is buried in the
Rockbridge Cemetery in Jackson Co., NC.

Hope this helps.

Naomi

That's a good question. I had thought he was a son of Roderick SHELTON. I'm now convinced that William is a son of Sheriff John SHELTON of Stokes/Surry region, but need proof. William had a brother Marshell (d. SC) and John (d. Greenville Co., NC). John, the father, was son of David of Caswell Co. This line descends from the Hanover/Rural Plains branch, I think. My line is Sarah SHELTON who married 1828 to Edward CHASTAIN. She was daughter of William by 2nd wife Lydia PARKER
