I am looking for the same orphanage, that is where my dad went to after his father shot and killed the preacher in church. I can't seem to find out anything about this place. My dad was there in 1922 or 23 we think, but my mom said it was called Wolfe Street Orphanage. And he had one sister that was 16 so she went to CA, and his little brother Ralph went to a rich family in CA also. But this is all I know about the orphanage. And yes it was in Little Rock.

Thanks Laura :)
My dad was too young to remember anything about the place. Other than he didn't mind being there, because he knew where he was going to sleep each night, and got to eat 3 meals a day.
I will try and find out more about this Home, and post it here, if and when I do. But, thanks for letting me know the name.

Angie

A directory published in 1937 lists Arkansas Children's Home and Hospital, 804 Wolfe St., Little Rock. It was founded in 1922 by the Rev. O.P. Christian.

The Arkansas Children's Home was listed as recently as 1979, according to page 9 of "Adoption Agencies, Orphanages and Maternity Homes: An Historical Directory," published in 1982. At one time, this book was available at the Ozarks Regional Library in Fayetteville, Catholic Social Services in Little Rock, and William F. Laman Public Library in North Little Rock.

The federal census of 1930 (and earlier) would list the inmates with their ages, etc. The 1940 census should be made public after 72 years.

I was wrong on who my dads father was-his name is Talmage Scruggs but he passed away in Muldrow, Oklahoma not in Mississippi. He was born August 15, 1887 in WHITE COUNTY ARK. On Feb. 2, 1908 he married Hettie Maud Heggie. PLEASE anyone who knows where Talmage Scruggs is buried at in Muldrow, OKLAHOMA let me know. Iknow my dad had told me that he does have a brother but didn't get adopted together.

Where do I look for the list you are referring to, I tried to find it but couldn't. Thanks so much. My dad was there sometime in the 1920's and I'm trying to find his brother that was a little younger than him and got adopted. My dad was born Feb. 1912 in Rosebud, ARKANSAS -- would love any help!!!

You wrote, "Where do I look for the list you are referring to, I tried to find it but couldn't." I think you are asking about the 1930 Census.

Little Rock is in Pulaski county, Arkansas. If you are interested in the people listed in the 1930 census, I suggest you find a friendly genealogist who uses the message board for that county here at Ancestry.com :

http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=an&p=l...

Ancestry.com has made the federal census of 1930 available online to those who pay a subscription fee. However, it might not be that simple. I have seen dozens of problems on another board (New York County, NY) relating to finding the proper assembly district, that I recommend finding someone with experience in census research.

Hopefully, that person would do a free lookup for you.

My father-in-law and his 2 sisters were placed in the AR Children's Home in Little Rock by his paternal grandparents after his Mom and Dad died in 1935. We have copies of the Foster and the Adoption papers.
Do you think we'd be able to get copies of other paper work from the files?
