SF / Oakland Ferrymen?

My great grandfather was reported to have been a ferry man on the San Francisco/Oakland Ferry sometime between 1904 and 1915. Can anyone get me pointed in the right direction for information on the Ferry system, it's employees etc??? Seems he left my great grandmother and infant grandfather, never to be heard from again sometime in that time period. Any hints, suggestions would be appreciated.

SF/Oakland ferry at that time was most likely the Key System, the major operator up until the opening of the Bay Bridge in the 1930s. SF Public Library and its history room have several references. Contact them directly
