My name, Noble, may have been altered by census worker 1870 in Oak Harbor , Ohio. It may have been Nabel or Nable. The following seem to coincide with your posting: GGG grandfather was William Noble (sp?) born in Hamburg, Germany 19 June 1830, came to America 1850, worked in NewYork in a provision store till 1852 when he moved to Ohio where he worked as a carpenter (he had apprecenticed in Hamburg). His father was Frederick Noblr(Nabel?) of Hamburg. As far as we know he died there. Could ther be a connection with your family? Don Noble :drrenoble@aol.com

I don't believe we have the same ancestors---I know the name has been altered many times---but my grandparents came directly to Portage Pa., and didn't live anywhere else----Some of my uncles lived in Oklahoma when they were grown, and one in the state of Washington. Sorry, no match.

Dear John,
My maternal grandfather was Hugo C. Nabel, born in Hamburg in 1889 (I think). He went to sea an early age, sailed square-rigged ships, joined the German Navy in 1910 where he learned diving, missed WWI while his ship was interned in Chile, was ship wrecked and eventually ended up in San Francisco where he met my grandmother around 1918, or so. He worked in the Bay Area as a rigger and diver before retiring in the 1950s. He lived out his life in Oakland, Los Gatos, and Santa Cruz, California. Every Christmas we would get letters and pictures from his German relatives. The pictures go way back in time but the eldest he and my grandmother visited when they went back to Hamburg in 1960 was who was referred to as Tante Alma (Wulf, I believe) on the back of photos. Looking from around a table in one of the German family holiday photos (that looks like it's in the 1950s) are faces with the matching names on the back: Franz, Paul, Emma, Alma, Hannelore, Lina, Willy, Martha, Hedi, Olly, Christa, Lanny, and Ruth. The last three are kids ranging from what looks like 5 to 10 in age. In other pictures there's a Carl and Martha Wulf. My grandparents continued to write to my grandfather's German relatives until they both died in about 1985. There are close to 200 photographs ranging from the mid-1970s to the turn of the century and my grandfather's childhood. My wife and I are faculty as Michigan State University and she recently came back from a week in Hamburg. I'd not been able to locate the pictures and wasn't sure what to do with her proximity to likely relatives in Germany. While looking through a larger box of my grandparents photos I reacquainted myself with the stash of German relatives' pictures. Though Hugo Nabel was always regarded as my grandfather it wasn't until after their deaths in 1985 that I learned Grandpa Hugo was not actually my mother's father. Family secrets unravel slowly, if at all. So although there's certainly a historic tie with the Nabel's it's not a blood tie as best I can make out. If John Nabel is related to my grandfather, I'd certainly be willing to share the wealth of pictures and what ever stories come to mind. I do recall my grandfather mentioning that he also thought he had a brother or some close relative immigrate to New York early on in his life. All for now. Let me know if this matches your recollections of relatives as well.
Sincerely, Brian DeLany (Grandson of Hugo C. and Ruth Nabel)
