Re: Gaarde family, Denmark to Iowa
Dear Sara, I am the great-granddaughter of Peter A Gaarde, son of Anders Gaarde, both whom came to Iowa from Denmark in the late 1870's. I see your posting today and wanted to get in touch with you ASAP. I am currently doing research on their immigration from Schleswig-Holstien, Denmark and now know the name of the ship they came to the US on and the actual date of arrival. Please get in touch with me at mcjksmith@comcast.net. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Re: Gaarde family, Denmark to Iowa
My grandmother Thomsen was Anne Marie Gaarde. She came from Denmark at the age of 9 in 1879-80. The family settled in Denmark Twp, Ringsted, IA. Is this the same family of your inquiry? If I can provide any information I will. The last big reunion that I remember was in 1978. There were descendents of a couple of my grandmother's sisters that were not located at that time. I would be interested in any information you would like to share. One of my father's (Clarence Thomsen) cousins (Linda Nielsen - Lena Gaarde Rovn's daughter)) now deceased, had started a record of the family. Now that she and her husband are deceased, I have lost contact with the family and do not know which of her children might have the records. I am excited that someone else is searching the family and look foward to hearing from you.

Re: Gaarde family, Denmark to Iowa
Yes, this is the family I am descended from, too. There was a typo in your posting. Anne Marie was a lot more than 9 when they came to the U.S. Eight of her nine children had been born in Denmark before they came to the U.S. Will exchange any and all info on this family.

Re: Gaarde family, Denmark to Iowa
My grandmother Thomsen also had the same name as her mother and was one of the nine Gaarde children. She was called Mary by many of the family members. She was the one that lived in Sioux City.
Who was your ancester? I have to admit that I do not have much information to share. I did not have contact with the family as a young child and did not meet my Aunt Ella and Grandmother until I was in about 7th grade. My parents had divorced and I lived in Indiana. However, my mother did keep in contact with them while I was growing up.
By the time I was in high school and college we were back in touch with Bob and Linda Nielsen and also Frank and Della Nash. I'm thankful for that.
Let me know what is missing about my grandmother, her two marriages, and descendents. I'll gladly share any and all information I have.
Thanks so much for replying.

Re: Gaarde family, Denmark to Iowa
Great to get in touch with you, Susan! I now understand who you are. We are cousins. I am looking at a photo of the nine children of Anders and Anna Marie Petersen Gaarde, taken around 1910. I see Mary. She is identified. I have quite a lot on the Gaarde family. Will be happy to share. Would appreciate it if you could send me a separate e-mail with your mailing address.
I am a descendent of the oldest child of Anders and Anna Marie Petersen Gaarde. His name was Nels Gaarde. He was of course born in Denmark, came to Iowa in 1875, lived in Clinton, Iowa; married Katrine Mains. Then I am a descendent of Nel's son Chris Gaarde (known as "Kidda"), and then Chris' son Harry Gaarde (1927-1982) was my father.
I have Anna Marie Gaarde, whom I think is your ancestor, as the fifth child of Anders. She was born June 7, 1870 in Denmark. I have her marrying Andrew Christensen in 1890 in Emmetsburg, Iowa; and her death Nov. 7, 1969 in Sioux City, Iowa. I have her husband Andrew Christensen's death in 1906.
Children by Andrew Christensen: 1. Leonard, b. April 30, 1898 in Sioux City, Iowa. Died Oct. 29, 1958 also in Sioux City. 2. Ella Mary, b. May 30, 1900 in Sioux City, Iowa. I have no marriage data. Death date of Aug. 13, 1973, no death place listed.
Second marriage of Mary Gaarde Christensen to E. M. Thomsen, and then one child listed: 3. Clarence Thomsen, b. April 24, 1910 in Sioux City, Iowa.
Now, tell me which of these children you are descended from and I will see what I have on them.
