I don't know if we are from the same da Pontes? My family is descends from Lorenzo da Ponte. The time your relative came to the states is about the same.

I have not found the name Lorenzo in my family. My family is from the Island of Sao
Miguel. My great-grandmother Emilia came here with just herself and two children. Her sister was already here with her husband and their names are Maria and John Thomas. I think Emilia had a brother named Manuel but he never came to the U.S.

My grandfather was Jose daPomte Rebello and he did have a brother named John. He was born in Sao Miguel and was born in 1881.

Connection?

Hi... Lorenzo daPonte is part of my family
'lore'. It is believed that one of our girl
children was adopted by Lorenzo Ann Grahl daPonte (a long time ago, of course). I've done a great deal of research and although there are references to "the adopted daughter", she is never named, except as the wife of a German Baron.
Lorenzo was an'off-and-on' resident of NYC.
And apparently a neighbor of my people.
I've posted my E-mail address. I'd enjoy hearing from you.

family is also from there.

David ... I'm just getting around to rechecking this message board. Your line "I'm descended from Lorenzo da Ponte" stirred my blood. I've done a lot of research on that line and I'd like to make a connection, although it's not my 'tree' by blood it is believed that one of my 'greats' was adopted by Lorenzo and his wife Ann Grahl (albeit legally or informally, I don't know). I know there's a da Ponte connection with Louisiana. If you think any of this ties into your work, contact me, I'll share. JAW
