Hello,

I recently read a message from Earl Davis from Staffordshire, England wanting to hear information about the Cyples surname.
I am looking for information on any descendants of Henry Cyples (b:1829). I believe one of his children came to the U.S. in the early 1900's.

Any info would be appreciated. Please contact me by e-mail. Thanks

Hi Al.

I am so pleased that someone else has an interest in the hisoty of the CYPLES family.

So fat there are only three of us and it will be nice to add a fourth.

If you are decended from Henry CYPLES (1829) then we will be distant cousins. This Henry was my third cousin from several generations back.

I connected Henry to the "master" CYPLES tree back in the summer of 2000. I have the birth certificate of his son Benjamin.

Benjamin was born on 20th November 1861 at York Street, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.

The birth certificate shows that as well as his father being Henery CYPLES his mother was Mary Ann Fradley.

I have seen a copy of Henry and Mary Ann's marriagve certificate which shopws that Henry is the son of Joseph CYPLES.

Census retuen togthers with the baptism records of St peters Parish Chrch show that Henry is the son of Joseph CYPLES and Rachel Westaby.

I have much more info (indeed I belive all CYPLES in the UK to be decended from the same person).

I am happy to share info on a like basis.

One word of caution, whilst most CYPLES in the US are related to the Staffordshire, England CYPLES a few are actually from German origin, this have been anglisised from Sipple.

Really look forward to hearing from you again. BTW Are you decended from Benjamin CYPLES or a brother that I am currently unaware of.

Regards Earl.

Hi Earl,

I was glad to hear back from you so quickly.

Here is what I know on my end. My great grandfather was Benjamin Cyples. I do know that he was from the UK as well as his son Charlie (my grandfather) who came to the US as a boy. I'm not sure exactly when that was though. I also don't know about other siblings of Benjamin. I remember seeing a trunk in the attic when I was young with Wolverhampton stenciled on the side.

At this time I am the only one here in Ohio with the last name Cyples although I have an aunt that was born Cyples but of course changed when she married back during WW II.

Any ideas on when Benjamin came to the US?

I have just started looking into this whole thing and I'd like to know there are others out there. I have found some with the Cyples name in NJ, but to my knowlege, no relation unless you might have other information.

Again, it was great to hear from you and I look forward to sharing what I know about this matter.

My best,

Al

Hi again.

In 1881 Benjamin was living at an address recorded as:-

"Houses at the Top of Alma Street" in Wolverhampton. At this time he was employed as a "Shearer - Iron".

He is living with his parents and his sister Harriett who was also born in Wolverhampton.

These are the only CYPLES family who are living in Wolverhampton at this time.

All their cousins are still living in Stoke On Trent at the time.

The CYPLES name originated in Stoke On Trent in the 1600's.

My Great, Great Grandmother was Edna CYPLES, a fourth cousin of your Benjamin.

As far as the NJ CYPLES line is concerned, I am currently working on this. Current eveidence suggests that three seperate CYPLES families emigrated to NJ.

One of these was Edward CYPLES the brother of my GG Grandmother. He livied in Trenton.

Can you just confrim that your Charles CYPLES was born 6 Apr 1885 and died in 1967?

I also have some information from the Social Security Death Index which you may already have.

This shows a Lottie CYPLES (1889-1975) was she Charles wife?

There is also a Josephine CYPLES(1890-1979). Not sure who she is yet.

There is also info on a Dorothy CYPLES (1923-1963)

According to my Family Tree program, we are related as 7th Cousins.

Do you still live in OH?

Hello again Earl,

Let's see....Charles was born on April 6, 1885 and he and Lottie were husband and wife. They were my grandparents. I think I've heard of Josephine and will check the next time I speak to my aunt. I believe she lived in Columbus, Ohio and was my grandfathers sister but I'm not positive of that.

Dorthy was my mother, married to Charles (b 1920 - d 1965), son of Charles.

I do still live in Ohio, Cleveland to be exact.

I would love to know what happened to Harriett, Benjamin's sister. Did she move to the U.S. or stay in the UKK.? I am also not sure of the year Benjamin came here although I do believe my grandfather was a young man at the time.

I really do appreciate the help you've given me regarding the family name. Benjamin died when I was just a baby and I lost my parents very young and my grandfather too so family information has been hard to come by. I know that Benjamin was excited to have a boy born into the family to carry on the name, and since I have no sons it is good to know there are others to do this.

I will research Josephine Cyples and get back to you in this regard.

Best wishes,

Al

Hi again Al.

If you would rather e-mail me, my e-mail address if:-

EarlJDavis@aol.com

Thanks for clearing up the information I had on Cyples in Ohio.

Any additional information is always welcome.

Do you know the reasons that Benjamin emigrated?

Just to give you some more background.

Your great grandfather Henry Cyples was baptised at St Peters Stoke on 2nd August 1829.

I have so far traced 5 of his brothers and sisters:-

Elizabeth, Isaac, Rachel, Herbert and John.

Henry's father was Joseph Cyples and his mother was Rachel Westaby.

Jospeh and Rachel married on 17th December 1826 at Fulford in Staffordshire.

Rachel died young and Henry remarried in 1843 at Cheadle, Staffordshire to Esther Salt.

You GG Grandfather Joseph was baptised in 1776 and made his living as a Potter.
He had at least three sisters. I don't yet know of any brothers.
Joseph's parents were Isaac and Elizabeth Cyples.

Isaac you GGG Grandfather was also a Potter and the son of two Cyples cousins who had married.

Isaac was the grandson of my own GGGGGG Grandfather John Cyples who is of course also your GGGGGG Grandfather and where we share the same ancestory.

Can I ask a few questions about the Cyples family in Ohio?

1) Do you know the name and maiden name of Benjamins wife?

2) Could you tell me Benjamins date and place of death?

3) Do you know what Lottie's maiden name was?

4) Could you tell me your parents dates and places of birth?

I would love to add any other information about the Ohio Cyples to my family tree.

Hello William.

Nice to hear from you. A number of branches of the Cyples family immigrated to Canada. Cyples is English in origin and the first recordings of the name in this from appear in Staffordshire, a county shire in central England.

If you give me your grandparents (& great-grandparents) names I will see if I have anything on your ancestry.

Does Cumbria ring any bells?

Hi Bill.

I have been discussing the ancestry of William Harold Cyples with Edna Cyples Smith. Edna reminded me that a nephew of William Harold knew that William Harold's father was William Cyples who was born in Cumbria in 1892.
I researched the family history of William Cyples of Cumbria earlier in the year.

Your grandfather, William Harold Cyples was an airman in the Second World War. He was killed during the war. I obtained a copy birth certificate of your great grandfather. He was born 7th March 1892 at Parton, Whitehaven in Cumbria. Edna tells me he immigrated to Canada in about 1912.

Your great grandfathers birth certificate showed he was the son of your great – great grandfather William Cyples and Margaret Dianah Hardaker. I therefore obtained the marriage certificate of William and Margaret. They married 27th July 1890 at Leeds. The marriage certificate showed your great-great grandfather was the son of your GGG Grandfather Oliver Cyples

I found your GG Grandfather William aged 12 and your GGG Grandfather Oliver on the 1881 census living at 3 Drayton Manor Yard in Hunsley in Yorkshire. This showed William was born in 1869 at Leeds and Oliver in 1827 at Longton in Staffordshire. Olivers wife was called Elizabeth.

Oliver was baptised in 1836 at Longton to your GGGG Grandparents William and Ellen Cyples. The 1851 census of Longton shows that William was born about 1808 in Longton. No record of his birth or marriage has ever been found. His wife Ellen however was born in Shropshire, England in 1811. Her parents were Sylvannus and Jane Ball from whom you are a direct descendant.

Regards Earl.

I am very interested in this research. I am Alan b.1951 son of J.Edward b.1925. I showed the info to my father. He is very interested and could verify the info from third generation #4 William Cyples (1869) my G grandfather. However your resarch indicates he married Margaret Dianah Hardaker. My father advises that William's wife's maiden name was Margaret Glew. We are not aware if she was previously married so unable to comprehend the different name. Also my father (J.Edward) states that father William (1892) told him that one of our ancestors was born with the surname of Burton and that his parents were killed in some way and that the Burton child was adopted by the Cyples family. My father doesn't remember which generation but if the info is correct it would possibly have been William (1806/1807) or Oliver (1836). If any research could prove or disprove any of this I would be interested in knowing.

Hello Alan. Nice to hear from you. I have the birth certificate of William CYPLES born 7th March 1892. The birth certificate shows he was born at Parton, Whitehaven in Cumbria, England. It records that his parents were William CYPLES and Margaret Dianah HARDAKER.

I also have the marriage certificate of William CYPLES and Margaret HARDAKER, which states that Williams father, was Oliver CYPLES.

The 1881 census shows that Oliver was born in Longton, Staffordshire in about 1836. I don’t have Oliver’s marriage certificate to his wife Elizabeth but Oliver’s baptism appears in the Longton Church records on 22 June 1836. He was the son of William CYPLES and Ellen BALL.

The 1851 Longton census shows the family and indicates that William was born about 1806 or 1807 in Longton. I have looked and looked for his baptism record and for his marriage to Ellen BALL without success. This is not the first time I have heard the surname BURTON supplied in connection with the CYPLES family and I looked for a William BURTON / Ellen BALL marriage again without success.

William CYPLES marriage to Margaret HARDAKER occurred on 27th July 1890 at Leeds.

I wonder if Margaret HARDAKERS mother may have been a GLEW?

Regards Earl.

Thank you Earl for the information. Mt father (J.Edward) was interested to read your reply. He was always under the impression that his father William's (1892) mother's maiden name was Glew so possibly there is some information there that can be uncovered. You have compiled some really interesting information. Maybe something can be uncovered regarding the "BURTON" connection as well as my father recalls his father speking of that often - if only we would have been more inquisitive. Hello Glyn.

Nice to hear from you. All the Cyples from Burslem that I have come acorss so far have all been descended from John Cyples born about 1792.
John married twice. He married Sarah Elkins at Bucknall in 1812 and Elizabeth Wallbank at Norton in 1818.
Although he had a large family most of the Cyples who later lived in Hanley and Burslem are descended from two of his sons, Walter and Richard.
John Cyples born about 1792 was almost certainly a grandson of John Cyples (1725-1784) although there is some debate as to whether his parents were John and Catherine Cyples or brother Edward Cyples and his wife Sarah.

If you know who your great grandfather was I may be able to tell you exactly how you connect to John.

Hello again Glyn.

I have spent the last week researching this for you and it has proven very successful.

Your grandfather Percy was the son of Edward Wilmot Cyples, an Earthenware Potter. During the Great War Percy was Private 10200 in the 3rd North Staffords and also worked as a Potters Ware Decorator. He married Annie Churchman on Christmas Eve 1916.
Percy and Annie lived at 16 Station Road at Brockmoor in the Parish of Kingswinford.
William Churchman and Minne Mansell were the Witnesses to Percy and Annie's wedding.

Percy was the son of Edward Wilmot Cyples SR, your great grandfather. Annie was the daughter of James Churchman another of your great grandparents. James Churchman was a Horse Driver.

Percy had three siblings that I know of but there are probably more. His brother Edward Wilmot Cyples JR was born circa 1889 in Burslem. A sister Gertrude followed in 1891 and another Ada in 1898. Ada was born on 9th September 1898 in 20 Clewes Street in Burslem. Presumably this was the family home at the time.

Percy's mother was Mary Jane Dodd your great grandmother.

Your great grandfather Edward Wilmot Cyples SR was born circa 1866 in Burslem. His father (your great great grandfather) was Edward Cyples and his mother was called Sarah.
I have so far found 8 children of your great great grandparents.

Edward was born on 9th April 1843 at Broad Street in Shelton. Sarah was born circa 1846 at Crewe. Edward made his living as a Potter.

One of Edwards other sons was Ernest Edward Cyples who married Mary Purcell. They had a son Henry Purcell Cyples who was your grandfathers 1st cousin. I only mention this, as co-incidentally Henry was my uncle Gordon’s School Master. Henry only died in 1999 aged 86.

Back to your Great Great Grandfather Edward. He was born in 1843 to Walter Cyples and Edna Toplis, your GGG Grandparents.

Walter and Edna had 6 children that I know of. Walter and Edna married on 7th February 1842 at Shelton.

Walter was the son of John Cyples and Elizabeth Wallbank your GGGG Grandparents. Edna was the daughter of William Toplis and Elizabeth Machin, another set of your GGGG Grandparents.

John Cyples was born circa 1792 at either Shelton or Longton. I am working on his ancestry at the moment but I am 95% sure he was a grandson of John Cyples (1725-1784) which makes us 6th cousins. This also makes you a fellow GGGGGGGG Grandson of Richard Cyples born sometime before 1680 and the first person known to use the Cyples surname. We are both 11th Generation descendants of the original Cyples.

Regards for now.

Earl.

I was talking with my dad today, he says that
Grandfather Percy was in North Staffordshire Regiment,
but his number was 5039795,
He did have a sister named Ada.
Dad remembers his mother saying once that grandfathers parents had i fish -chip shop down furlong lane, Burslem

Also he never heared anything of , Brockmoor or
King Winsford.

Dad also said that grandfather was not a ware decorator,
he was a maker , making basins and bowles, they used to mention this a lot , grandmother used to work for
him.

Earl do you have a birthdate for Percy?

Regards Glyn

Hi Glyn.

Yes Percy was born on 25th November 1892 at Sparrow Street in Portshill (next to Burslem).

I have a copy of both Percy's birth and marriage certificates and also the birth certificate of his sister Ada.

The birth certificates of both Percy and Ada confirm their parents as Edward Wilmot CYPLES and Mary Jane DODD.

Edward Wilmot and Mary Jane DODD married in the Wolstanton District in the first three months of 1889.

The war time marriage certificate of Percy CYPLES and Annie CHURCHMAN from 1916, confirms that he was a Pottery Ware Decorator and that Annie worked in an ammunition works. It is this certificate where Percy gives his number in the 3rd North Staffords as 10200.

Perhaps the other number your father has is a later number from another regiment. The 3rd North Staffords was a Militia Regiment. Was Percy later called up for full service?

The marriage certificate also confirms that Percy was the son of Edward Wilmot CYPLES and Percy gives his address as 16 Station Road, Brockmoor, Kingswinford on the certificate.

Do you know who Percy's brothers and sisters married. It will save me the time in looking them up.

Regards Earl.

Dear Earl,
Thank you for the last information, the date of Gradfathers birth has settled my mind extremly, Has my father was telling me different information, mind you I cant expect him to remember everything these dayus now that he's 73.

I will ask him about Percy's brothers and sisters and see if he can remember who they married.
I will also ask dad if Percy later called up for full service due to other service number.

Earl how much would you charge for a scan of both Percy's birth and marriage certificates and also the birth certificate of his sister Ada.

Hello Laura.

Great to hear from you.

I looked into the ancestry of Derek CYPLES in February 2000 when Edna Smith mentioned to me that you had been in contact with her.

I searched for your grandfather’s birth certificate from 1921 to 1930 but could find no reference to it at the General Record Office. Perhaps he was born a few years later?

If you are interested I will have another attempt at researching Derek. If you could answer the few questions below it will help me.

1) Do you know the maiden name of Agnes?

2) Do you know when and where Derek and Agnes married?

3) What part of Stoke on Trent did Derek live in.

One of the first things I will be doing is tracking down the marriage certificate of Derek and Agnes. Could you check to make sure no one in you immediate family has this before I try and get a copy from the General record Office.

Regards Earl

Dear Earl,

Thankyou for your response.
In answer to your first question the maiden name of my Grandma (Agnes) is Potts.
I'm not sure where they were married but I will find out!(I will also enquire about the marriage certificate)
My Grandad lived in East Vale(s-o-t), then in Sandford Hill(s-o-t), and was born in 1928.

If it's any help Derek's Father's name was Richard Cyples.

Thanks
Laura

I have some information about the Cyples family.

immigrated about 1912

William married Maud Louise Jevons.

They had the following children:
6 i. J Edward
7 ii. Lawrence
8 iii. William Harold (~1919-1944)
** They also had a daughter named Lily, she is my grandmother. She lives in Cambridge, Ontario. Maud (my great-grandmother) passed away in 1988 (I believe) I will check on that and post again.
My grandmother would be so happy to hear from any of her family, so please reply!

Hi Larry
My name is Crystal. I am Donna Bowman's grandaughter and my mom is Debbie. She knows who you are. I don't have a lot of information myself but my grandma would probably be able to help you out. If there was anything you wanted to know in particular you can post back and I'll ask her.
Hope that helps!

Hi Laura. It's taken me almost 5 years but I think I have solved this one. Was your grandfather born 9th January 1927? If so he was born under the name Richard Derrick Cyples the son of Richard Cyples and Florence Webb who married on 16th June 1919. Richard was born circa 1897 at Longton to William Cyples and Hannah Ray.

Maud Louise Jevons is my mother-in-law's cousin. I am trying to locate the Canadian exploits of Maud's Uncle Edward Dobbins Moore. Maud went to Canada to help her Uncle in about 1913. I believe he had a shop of some kind. He had returned to the UK by 1919 where his eldest daughter my mother-in-law was born.

Any other information about the family is most welcome.

I saw your post on rootsweb from 5 years ago - I hope that is not to long ago for Crystal to still be intersted. . My mother-in-law's cousin was Maud Louisa Jevons who sailed out to Canada to help her Uncle Edward Dobbins Moore (mother-in-law's father)whom, I think, had some kind of shop. I wonder if your grandmother would know any stories about this.

My mother in law is now 88 and lives in the UK. We live in Tasmania.
