The Ohio connection is through Emma Catherine Biars who married George Washington Smith Jr. on Aug. 5, 1908. Emma was born July 20, 1878, in Harrison Township, Gallia County, Ohio, to Gustava “Gus” Biars (1850/1916) and his wife Catharine "Kate" Krause (about 1852/1932). Alternative spellings of Gus’s name include: Gustaphe Beiar, Gustav Bear, Gustif Biar, and Gustas Biar. Kate’s first name was spelled as Catharine and Cathrine and her last name, Kraus, Krause and Croush.
