Several descendants of Tom's Viau family told us about Esther Minna BOYER [1851 - 1935] doing laundry for the soldiers, while she was growing up in Plattsburgh, New York. This must have been during the 1860's. They never referred to the Civil War, just "helping the soldiers."
At about age 10, Esther BOYER helped her mother Adelaide PETEL BOYER hire out to do laundry, to support their large family, until her father Israel BOYER recovered from typhoid fever. Esther indicated it was long, hard work, boiling water and drying laundry outdoors, with equally large amounts of ironing. A gigantic pot of soup was part of their daily schedule also.
We would like to find details about military units close to the Boyers in Plattsburgh in 1860-61. Maybe Union forces, or a militia unit?
Thanks for any suggestions or sources.
