Yes, there are some Piatts of African American descent. Paul E Nichtman's "Blacks in Ohio in 1880" lists a few. One of those listed in Nichtman, Jacob Piatt (yes, another Jacob Piatt!!!) aged 45, Oxford Village, Butler Co OH, has been traced to the Ryle plantations of Boone Co KY. In fact, this Jacob Piatt was a Ryle slave, served in the Civil War, and changed his name to Piatt, perhaps during that service. His pension record refers to him as Jacob Ryle Piatt. An article about the Ryles and this Jacob (Ryle) Piatt and his family has been published in Kentucky Living by Elizabeth Terry-Testerman. The woman I believe to be Jacob (Ryle) Piatt's mother was born in VA in 1805.

I believe there are currently African American Piatts in Kentucky but I have not contact them or traced them.

Another area to keep in mind for the origins of African American Piatts/Pyatts would be South Carolina. The book "Down by the Riverside" by Charles Joyner, University of Illinois Press, 1984, chronicles life on the rice plantations of the Waccamaw River area of South Carolina. The book states that Martha Allston Pyatt, owner of the plantation known as Oatland in All Saints Parish, owned 215 slaves in 1860, 100 males, 115 females. "Bordering Oatland was Turkey Hill, owned in 1860 by William Heyward Trapier, who had acquired it by marrying into the Pyatt family." Slaves at Turkey Hill numbered 90, 44 males, 46 females. Many of the other plantations had Allston and, by marriage, Pyatt connections. If you should find a clue pointing to South Carolina, this book might be a good one to locate.

Yes, there are. My greatgrandfather was James Pyatt an African/Cherokee of Georgetown, SC. Today thier are still Pyatt family members in South Carolina. They are tall handsome and dark, and held leadership roles in the community. There was a plantation in Georgetown called Pyatt Plantation. I've been searching my family tree since 1980. I recently located a Pyatt, who is a second cousin in the DC Metro area. He just retired form the Washington Post as business editor. My mothers cousin went to college with him. The daughter of James Pyatt, Adele Pyatt married Richard Smith, (African/Cherokee). The Smith's are short, brown skinned and intelligent and still practice some of the indian traditions. They had 9 children including Virgie, my grandmother. Virgie Smith married Lewis Green. They had twin daughters. My mom was one of those twins. She settled in New York, married Daniel Day and had 7 children and I am one of the seven.

Now, how ironic is this? I see you posted mention of my Dad on August 20, the day before our (i.e., my twin brother and I) birthday.

Yes, there certainly are some Pyatts still in SC, as three of Dad's sisters are in Charleston. I've been in Brooklyn for the past 10 years.

I just subscribed to this service a couple of days ago; I see now that there's a LOT of the extended family out there. I'll check in soon,

Rudy

In regard to Jackson Ryle/Jackson Piatt.
Does anyone know when and why Jackson changed his last name from Ryle to Piatt?
Did he serve under Donn Piatt or Abram Piatt during the war or was there another reason?
Thank you for your time.
