Morgan County West Virginia and It’s People

The book, Morgan County West Virginia and It’s People, was published in 1981 by
the Historical and Genealogical Society of Morgan County WV in Berkeley Springs, West
Virginia.

The Preface states that a request was made by newspaper, radio, direct mailing and
personal contact for those people who were living, had been living or had roots in Morgan
County to submit their family stories. The society recognized the fact that some people
may not have been aware and thus did not submit information. Stories and photographs
were submitted by 500 writers with all the stories published for free.

The Historical and Genealogical Society of Morgan County lists information about it’s
history and members.

The problem with accessing the information is that you will come across different
surnames and references under a seemingly “unrelated” “Family Story”. As an example, I
shall use the listing under the Family Story of “Lacy and Mavadell MCCOY”. The
following people are listed under this Family Story: Lacy MCCOY, Marvin A. MCCOY,
Nora LINAWEAVER MCCOY, Mavadell RUPPENTHAL MCCOY, Ercel
RUPPENTHAL, Gladys CLOSE RUPPENTHAL, Henry Martin RUPPENTHAL,

information about a relative that isn’t listed individually.

The book is simply compiled....there is no index to look up various people.

I am not currently aware that there are any of these books for sell. I would appreciate
hearing from anyone who has knowledge about the availability of purchasing these books.
I have taken a loan of the book from the Washington County Free Library and it is
currently way overdue. I am having “trouble” returning it since it contains so much
interesting information about Morgan County. (There is a non-loan copy always available
at the Western Maryland Room of the Library.) I would LOVE to purchase a copy! If
there is interest in numerous copies, maybe we could approach the Historical and
Genealogical Society about re-publishing. I don’t have the slightest idea what this would
entail. Maybe in the future I could call and ask them. If and when I am able to get any
further information, I will post to the Morgan County Website. (I live in Williamsport
MD so I am not so very far from Berkeley Springs.)

I think it was a GREAT idea and was a very CREATIVE project to bond together the
Morgan County Community!!
