"JEAN CROCKETT came into Court and Chose JAMES GLEN her guardian and he was approved by the court." Washington County, VA, Court Minute Book No. 1 1777-1787. LDS film #34382, p. 70.
WHOSE UNDERAGE CROCKETT DAUGHTER IS THIS? By law she's between 14 and 21 on this date in order to be allowed to choose her own guardian, meaning that she was born between 1758 and 1765.
The will of David Crockett was filed for probate 1778 in Washington Co. Admrs. are Wm. & Robt Crockett. Securities Jno Coulter & Jno Lowry. Appraisers: Jno Cox, Wm Ingram, Abraham McClen & Jas. K____.
This is supposed to be the will of the grandfather of Davy Crockett, proved after the Indian masacre.
"Gramps" David is too old to have this Jean/Jane as a daughter, but who is she?
The James GLENN who is chosen as guardian is my research interest. He is originally from Frederick Co., VA, (the part that became Berkeley Co.) and had migrated through Botetourt Co. before hitting Washington Co., VA, by the Revolution. Up "nawth" in Frederick Co., his father (an older James Glenn who left a 1774 will in Berkeley Co., VA) neighbored David Crockett as early as 1752 according to land records.
Descendants of this Glenn family use "Crockett" as a first or middle name ... and on people born too early for this to be a tribute to the famous Davy.
Help! Can someone chew on this for me?
Answer here or contact me privately, either's fine. I'd just like a few opinions from seasoned Crockett chasers.
