Searching for any information regarding my ggrandfather, James Gilmore, who resided in the North Palem area in the late 1800's. He was a blacksmith by trade and was married to my ggrandmother Agnes Battson at the time of my grandfather's (William Charles Gilmore) birth at Merriton in 1888. James and Agnes later separated and Agnes subsequently married Charles Hill.

Im not being critical. But you may have better luck its not North Palem its north pelham. That is a small villiage abt 10 miles from StCatharines and there is a opresbyterian Church there and a cemetery beside. I might suggest that you write the church and Im sure the minister would be more than happy to ask his congreation to help you. I have cousins around there and I know that one of their friends was a Gilmore when they were growing up . The other suggestion is the Jordan Museum of The twenty is on line and you can email them. Its a small village a few miles from there but it has an excellent history base of the whole area. Because that whole area was originally settled by a portion of people UNited Empire Loyalists and others from pennsylvania that settled there it is very well documented. Every fall Jordan museum holds a poineer day around the first part of October and its excellent If you need more help I can probably give you some relatives names privately that may help from Pat

Thanks Pat...I'll check it out. I have it in my records as North Pelham, but didn't think when I posted the entry. I also listed Lincoln as a township when, I believe, it is actually Lincoln County.

Hi,

Pelham has a historical society. You can access their information through the Pelham Public library. Their E-mail address is:
pelhampl@post.library.on.ca

Besides the cemetery at the church, there is another cemetery down the road. I have relatives buried in both. I believe my sister has a book about the history of Pelham. She is away for 2 weeks. I will look Gilmore up when she comes home, or you can asked the Pelham library.

Sandy...Thanks for your information and referral to the library email address. I hate to impose and ask you to check the North Pelham cemetery, but it would really be helpful to know if he's buried there or any record of his passing. My grandfather, William, son of James Gilmore told me that James had been a blacksmith in North Pelham all his life and traveled in that area. The only possibility that I have found so far is a 1901 census record showing a James Gilmore born Oct 6, 1868 in Ontario. At the time of the census the place was indicated as St. Catherines. His birth date of 1868 would be consistent with my grandfather's birth date of 1888.

No problem, I just won't be able to get there till next week.

My dad grew up with a Gilmore family during the 1930's. They had a farm just outside of North Pelham. All he could remember is that they were a nice family. Nice to hear, but not much help.

I appreciate any information. This has been my most difficult family member to locate, due to the fact that my grandfather was brought up by his mother's parents and never knew his father's family.
