Cates and Copeland in 1850

On the 1850 Newlin/Alamance census, I have found relatives from totally different lines of my family tree as neighbors, and hope someone knows how they connect."Connect" means that one is caring for the other's infant. Maybe there IS no connection, but here are the families:
Ashford Copeland (brother to my GGGgranddaddy John of Chatham County) living with wife Eliza, several children, and 6-month-old Nerius Cates. Just a few homes away are Thomas Cates and wife Adeline (Sarah Adeline Perry, my cousin, 1c4r), parents of Nerius. What was the connection, if any, between the Copelands and the Cates/Perry family? I would dearly love to find an early link between these 2 families; the first link I was aware of was the 1875 marriage of my great-grandparents.
