I have no connection at all to this family but found this in the Dec. 15, 1859 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Gazette:

"A little girl, 8 years old, the daughter of Mrs. Dow, on Cotton street, Portland, was run over on Free street yesterday afternoon, by a horse and sleigh, driven at a rate of speed incompatible with the provisions of the City Ordinance. The child was somewhat injured, but to how great an extend we could not learn."
