He was my great grandfather and I am having a diffacult time finding much on him. He joined the military during the civil war while in Iowa. He was in the infantry and deserted from Co. E 34 regiment Iowa Infantry. The story is that he changed his name to John Wesley Saunders. He ended up in Nebraska and that is where I catch back up with him. He was mustered in on October 15, 1862 and he was 24 years old. He enlisted in Caritu (?) Iowa. His claimed residence was in Newbern. He deserted February 4, 1863 in Springfield Illinois. I have copies of John W Duncans civil war records. I have heard this story since I was a little girl. But I can find no documentation of John W duncan being my great grandfather John W Saunders. John passed away in June of 1916. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
