Was wondering if someone could shed some light for me.Family lore (yeah I know LOL) says my gg grandfather William Edward Devine fought in the Civil War ..or maybe not? My Great Aunt remembers her grandmother getting a pension after he died. She said it listed him as being a 'scout' Now he was the right age to be in Civil War BUT he did not get married until 1870 so there is a Possibility he was in the Indian Wars correct? Any Advice on where to start? He was from OH but the online records I have checked do not match up (His wifes name was Catherine Ellen Devine)Also in the census records where they ask you to check if you served in the Civil War it is NOT checked..
