SS Elihu Root, WWII Liberty Ship
I have a log of the SS Elihu Root for the time period of March 20, 1944 to March 20, 1945. During this year the Elihu Root was involved in the Invasion of Europe from Englnd from June 7, 1944 (D-day+1) to Normandy until February 27, 1945 (arrive back to Souhthampton from LeHarve.
This is from my cousin's diary that he kept while in the Merchant Marine. His name is Charles C.Newfield.
1. Is there interest in me inputting the detail of this ship's log from his diary? If so, where should I input it? Here?
2. Anyone else who served on the Elihi Root? At the same time as my cousin? Do you remember him from this ship or another ship?
3. Who was the Elihiu Root named for? The member of FDR's cabinet? Any member of that family interested in this information?

Re: SS Elihu Root, WWII Liberty Ship
I served on the subject ship from March 21, 1945 through September 18, 1945 as Second Mate. We were about 5 days out of the Panama Canal heading west with a load of ammo when the war ended. Within hours we received radio orders to turn around and head back to Houston, Texas where we discharged the ammo, the ships company was all paid off and I believe the ship was put in mothballs. We had a great skipper by the name of Wm. Johnson

Re: SS Elihu Root, WWII Liberty Ship
Going through an old diary of my Great-Uncle's with my parents - googled the S.S. Elihu Root & came across this post. My Great-Uncle, Arthur Leroy Day, boarded this ship on July 10, 1945 and wrote very generally the same as your posting above. He was honorably discharged as a Gunner's Mate Third Class on December 5, 1945.
