The Ashtabula, Ohio Railroad Disaster 1876

I am looking for information on the Harry Wagner, who was a smoking car conductor on the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railroad, and who was killed in the Ashtabula Train disaster in 1876. Are there railway employment records out there anywhere? If so, where would I find those for the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern (LS & MS) railroad? I do know that this Harry is buried in Ashtabula, but I don't know where his home base was. This "Harry" may have been my grandfather Hiram Wagner, who worked for the same company and died about 1876. Did railways pay widows in those days? Would there have been any kind of a paper trail to follow?
