Russell Bates was the son of James Alexander Bates and Mary Murphy. He died between 1850-1860 in Washington Co., AR. Mary Hess was the daughter of John Hess and Ann Snider (Schneider) of Blount County, TN. She died after 1860. Their daughter, Tabitha, was married in 1840 to Dr. Robert Minor Winn, Sr.
