Okay! Now, thanks to the amateurheralds web site I found the motto on my scarab ring. It means "Aim at a sure end." That's me! Now there were several names after the translation of the motto. Are those the names of authors, or other resource persons? The names were Bissland, Corse, Crosse, Howard, Thompson, Tidswell. So now what? I sent a picture of my ring, and I'm going nuts waiting to hear from someone!!! By the way, my grandmother (whose ring it was) came from Silesia -- born there in 1862.

Hi Heidi,
<<The names were Bissland, Corse, Crosse, Howard, Thompson, Tidswell.>> Those names would be families that each used that Motto as mottos aren't restricted to a single family as are Arms.

The fact that you have now introduced information that the arms may come from the continent of Europe puts a different slant on things - an area in which I'm not familiar. I can only hope that someone that has a deeper knowledge of Coninental European heraldry will be able to assist you further.

Good luck!

Hello Heidi

I found this motto on my family (Welton) Coat of Arms this afternoon. If you click on my name, choose the Welton/Wakeman Family tree and Look at John welton born 1667 - I have a picture of the coat of arms there

Hi there.

That's strange. I couldn't find any arms registered in the surname of WELTON, but there are several (13) registered in the surname of WELDON and four (in Ireland) in the surname of VELDON.

The arms that you 'led'* us to in the text of your post appear to be some that are produced by 'bucket shops' in an effort to gouge money out of unsuspecting heraldically naive members of the public. Those arms (well, the shield, anyway) depicts one of several registrations in the surname of WELDON to be found in Burke's General Armory (1884) with a blazon of Argent a Cinquefoil Gules on a Chief Gules a demi-Lion Argent.

However, that said, none of the WELDON registrations appear to carry the motto that is the subject of this thread who, if they have any motto at all, it is Bene Factum.
