Surnames: Poaps, Papst, Pobst.
Having been nudged a bit by the Message Board Admin.,
I wanted to mention that I believe the name Poabst or
Poab to have evolved from the German name of Pabst.
The name itself has been discussed a few times not
only on the PABST message board, but also on the
ONT-STORMONT-DUNDAS-GLENGARRY-L@rootsweb.com
mail list, and this may be found in the mail list archives
of that list in the year 2000.
Also, the name PABST is found many times in the
Hetrina volumes of the Archivschule Marburg/Hessen
as Hessian soldiers of the American Revolution, serving
in America and Canada. There was also one Adam Pobst
who settled in Upper Canada's Eastern District.
Needless to say - this is an interesting name to pursue.
Greetings,
semi-retired Hessian soldier researcher.
John Merz.
