Term pensioner as an occupation for a father on a Scottish baptism record 1814

Hi
I have come across a baptism record that has "pensioner" as the occupation of the father, which in baptisms for later children appears mostly as "mason", and once as "farmer".
Has anyone seen this before on other records - is it likely to be military pension related, or something to do with having a pension from e.g. land?
08/11/1814 Ross, John (O.P.R. Kilmuir Easter Ross & Cromarty)
Donald Ross Pensioner, Dolnay [?] and by his spouse Elizabeth Munro a child baptised named John. Witnesses George Ross & Donald Mitchell. [Other entries are mostly at Calrichy/Calrichie, one being at Heathfield - appears to be for the same couple, although later ones list mother as Elspat Munro, but the 1825 one for child Janet had father mason at Calrichy, but had the same two witnesses].
