Humphrey and Van Allen lines from Columbia County New York

Surnames: Humphrey - Van Allen
I am actively researching two lines, both of which moved from Columbia County, New York, to Dunham and other towns in Missisquoi County, Lower Canada, possibly via other locations. My Humphrey family moved to the Dunham area about 1799-1806. Thomas and Eva (Schryver) Humphrey and some of their children, including Nicholas, Peter, Catharine, and Abraham made the move. My 3rd-gr-grandfather Nicholas Martin Humphrey was born in Dunham on 6 Dec 1806 to Nicholas and Margaret (Snyder) Humphrey. Nicholas Martin Humphrey married Sophia Van Allen (b 25 May 1810 NY), daughter of Andrew and Margaret (Diel) Van Allen, who were in Dunham at least 1825-1831. Nicholas and Sophia and possibly some of the others also lived in Upper Canada, but I have not found them there yet. I have searched the Dunham church and census records. Any additional information would be welcome.

Hi, I'm not absolutely sure this is the right Peter, but there is a marriage in Dunham for Peter Humphrey and Anna Fordyce in 1816.
(no parents names shown)

You thought the family may have been in Upper Canada at some point and there is a marriage for

Asa Humphrey age 20 born Durham, Quebec father P. Humphrey, mother Ann Fordyce

he married Jane Boweran age 29 born England father Thomas mother Hanna Porter
marriage date Nov. 15, 1860 Peterborough, Ontario

There is also a marriage 1841 Dunham, Quebec for James Nicholas Humphrey and Hannah Sargent (no parents names shown)

and Alvin James Humphrey age 34, born Quebec , parents James Nickolas Humphrey and Hannah
married Mary Martinson age 23, parents William and Margaret
marriage date Jan. 2, 1884 Middlesex, Ontario

** looks like James and Hannah baptized a few kids all at once
Charles Ashley born Oct. 1, 1848
Alvin born Aug. 9, 1850
Margaret born Oct. 24, 1853
all baptized Nov. 7, 1853 Methodist Church, Dunham, all children of James Nicholas Humphrey and Hannah Sargent

There are a lot of baptisms in Dunham and other areas of Quebec for Humphrey - it looks like many of your line were lsited under Methodist Church - too many to list here, but if you go to the
Quebec Vital and Church Records (Drouin Collection) 1621-1967
then enter just the surname Humphrey
and for each section Birth, death and marriage
put location as Methodist Church the list will come up

then do the same thing putting location as Anglican Church and another list will come up

By the way there is an Abraham Humphrey burial 1851 Philipsburg
which shows he was aged 76 years. Witness Austin Humphrey

I mention him because I see there is a baptism for an Abraham Austin Humphrey in 1842 St. Armand Methodist Church- very hard to read but signed Abram Austin Humphrey and Harriet Humphrey so I wonder if this is your Abraham and wife at bapt. of son
there is another bapt. on same page with same parents but I cannot read it.

The 1851 census for Dunham, Missisqoi has
HUMPHREY
Peter, age 55, born USA
Anna, age 53, born Nova Scotia
Elvin, age 24
Lucy age 18
Asa age 11
Albert, age 9
Charles E. age 26
Mary Ann age 19 born USA
all the children age 9-24 shown as born Canada B. which is Quebec

I'm guessing that maybe Mary Ann is a daughter in law - no relationships are shown

Albert Humphrey died Aug. 24, 1927 Middlesex, ON, but whoever gave the info didn't really know it correctly
He is shown as Albert Humphrey age 84, born Quebec Oct. 18, 1842
parents Peter Humphrey born Holland and Ann Fordyce born Scotland
Albert's
informant Effie Maria Humphrey, daughter

***********
There is a marriage for a Lucy Catherine Humphrey to Gwen Robert Royal
April 15, 1857 Dunham, but no parents names shown

His name is indexed as Gwen Robert Joyal and the image is hard to read but could be David or Devin ?
I looked for any birth/baptisms to see what it shows the father's name as - a daughter Clara born 1858 shows father as Robert, mother Lucy Humphrey
They are in the census for Quebec - Brome mostly but cannot find her death.

Alvin James Humphrey died Dec. 13, 1904 Middlesex - no parents shown

So the family is around in Canada Quebec and Ontario

Thanks for posting the info you have found on this family. As I indicated in my original post, I have searched the Quebec records and had found most of that. That is the right Peter Humphrey, son of Nicholas and Margaret. Here is what I have on his family:

Peter married Anna Fordyce on 19 May 1816 and they had fourteen children: Hannah M. (b 2 Mar 1817), James Nicholas (b 11 Apr 1819; bap 24 Jun 1842; d 1 May 1864; bur 4 May 1864), Zera Niles (b 12 Jun 1820; d 1821), Lydia (b 21 Nov 1821; d 1823), John Allen (b 10 Jun 1823; d 1824), William (b 20 Jun 1825; d 1827), Charles Edgar (b 25 Feb 1826), Elim C. (b 26 Jan 1828; d 5 Oct 1898), Lydia (b 27 Feb 1830; d 1831), Lois R. (b 24 May 1831; d 1840), Lucy Catherine (b 6 Apr 1835; bap 7 Dec 1854; d 1903), Asa (b 25 Mar 1840; bap 25 Dec 1854), and Albert (b 18 Oct 1842; d 24 Aug 1927).

Nicholas and Margaret Humphrey had two other sons: John (b 1 Oct 1800; bap 26 Oct 1800 Reformed Church, Mayfield, Fulton Co., NY), who I have not found any other records for, and Nicholas Martin (b 6 Sep 1806 Dunham; bap 27 Dec 1812 Anglican Church, Dunham). The latter is my 3rd gr-grandfather, so I have worked very hard on him. I have uncovered where he was for most of his life, but have yet to find him in Upper Canada. In the 1850 census (New York City) he indicated that his children Emmaline (b 1831/32), Andrew A. (b Jun 1835), and Charlotte (b 1837/38) were born in UC. I am primarily interested in finding this family in UC in the 1830s. There just aren't many records from there for that time.

HORACE HUMPHREY, senior member of the firm of Humphrey & Sons, is proprietor of the oldest manufacturing establishment in Joliet and enjoys the distinction of being one of the pioneer foundry men in Illinois. In 1861 he began the foundry business on a small scale, building a foundry on land that he first rented but later purchased. Gradually the business grew to large proportions, a machine shop was erected with a capacity of forty tons, and other improvements were made from time to time. At this writing the business place has a frontage of three hundred and twenty feet on Ottawa street. Machinery and castings of all kinds are manufactured and the quality of the products is such as to insure a steady demand for them. Mr. Humphrey represents the fourth generation in descent from a native of Holland, who, on account of persecution, went to Germany; he married a lady in Holland who was related to the Van Zandts, Bogardners and Anneka Jans family.
The grandfather, John Humphrey, Sr., a blacksmith by trade, devoted himself mainly to farming in Canada. Owing to his connection with political affairs in that country his farm was confiscated and he was forced to leave. He removed to Johnstown, N. Y., and later to Baldwinsville, the same state, where he died. His son, John, Jr., was born six miles from Montreal, and became a moulder and foundry man in Baldwinsville, N. Y., but removed to the west in later years and settled near Adrian, Mich., where he died. He married Phidelia
Darrow, who was born, of English parentage, in what is now Oneida County, N.
Y., and died in Michigan. Of their six children only three are living, our
subject and two sisters. The oldest of the family, Horace, was born at Baldwinsville, N. Y.,
April 6, 1828. From early boyhood he was familiar with work in a foundry, and when very
young was accustomed to make and sell castings for people in his neighborhood.
He was made a partner in the business and remained there for some years. In 1850 his father went to California, via the Isthmus of Panama, where he waited three months for transportation. During his father's absence he conducted the business. On the former's return, in 1851, he went to Cleveland, working there until the spring of 1852, when he returned to New York. Two years later, having been offered a position in Joliet, he came to this city and entered the foundry of Jones & Cogwin as foreman. He continued with the firm until they sold out two years later, after which he was employed at carriage-making. In 1861 he embarked in the foundry business for himself and during the almost forty years that have since elapsed he has been connected with the manufacturing interests of Joliet. He has given his time very closely to
business matters, with no desire to enter politics and no wish to hold public office, his participation in public affairs being confined to the casting of a Republican vote. While in Baldwinsville, N. Y., he married Miss Lucinda Howe, daughter of Cyrel Howe, a farmer of that town. They became the parents of six children, four of whom are living, namely: Mrs. Ida Payne, of Joliet; Cora, widow of W. J. Evans, deceased; H. Fred and Harry B., who are connected with
their father in business. Additional Comments: Genealogical and Biographical Record of Will County Illinois Containing Biographies of Well Known Citizens of the Past and Present, Biographical Publishing Company, Chicago, 1900File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/il/will/bios/humphrey982gbs.tx...
