Found Patrick Smith Sr's Death Date; f/o David Lindsey Smith

Posted: 24 Feb 2013 6:41PM GMT
Classification: Query
Surnames: Blankenship, Coleman, Lindsey, Pody, Smith, Teel,
Today, I located the death date of Patrick Smith, Sr. as Jan. 1870 on the 1870 Mortality Index for Coosa Co, AL.

Patrick Smith, Sr. m/ Mary Ann Lindsey, d/o Rev. War soldier, David Lindsey and was father to David Lindsey Smith and John Alexander Smith among others. (Some researchers have also named Elijah and Guy Smith Sr. as his sons, but as Patrick's marriage date has not been firmly established they COULD fit as much younger siblings or nephews vs. oldest sons).

This is our biggest clue to date in possibly narrowing down his place of burial and hopefully finding his grave. There are some concerns & minor discrepancies, so hopefully someone in / from Coosa or with more resources (knowledge, maps, sources etc.) can help.

Here is the info from my notes, much of it duplicated on the FindAGrave Memorial (#105763326) I created for him at:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=10...

(The Memorial does include some other additional info such as list of children).

Ancestry pg 12/ 26:
Stamped pg. 176, handwritten page 2:

Schedule 1 of the 1870 Census shows:

Flint Hill:

HH 26 / 27:

Smith, H. J. 23, m, farmer, AL, citizen
A. J. 21, f, keeping house, AL, can't write
Dora, 11 / 12, f, AL, July

HH 27 / 28:
Coleman, W. H., 55, m, farmer, 300, NC, citizen
M. R., 47, f, keeping house, AL, can't write

**BSF Note: Per instructions, the family # corresponds to the family # on the main (regular) census in column 2. Patrick was in FAMILY #27. The name "Colman" had originally been written in, but it looked partially marked out, though nothing had been written in instead. It is unclear whether he was living with this family 27, HJ Smith, which corresponds to the correct instructions or the WH Coleman (as the name given).

HJ Smith is Patrick's grandson, Henry Jackson Smith b/ 1847 m/ Alcey Jane (Nancy) Blankenship, son of John Alexander Smith (Patrick's son) and Mary Frances (Fanny) Pody.
Patrick Smith's daughter, Mary Jane (not MR) married William H. Coleman.

In light of the Coleman marking & no correction to family #27 & this being a closer relationship (daughter vs. grandson) and since the women usually cared for their elderly, he was probably living with the Colemans vs. the Smiths, but this is unclear.

HH 27 / 29:
Blankenship, MJ (NJ?), 22, m, farmer, 250, 220, AL, citizen
MJ, 15, f, keeping house, AL

HH 28 / 30:

Teel, T J, 23, m, farmer, 300 / 400, AL, citizen
T J, 16, keeping house, AL
W Henry, 23, farmer, AL, citizen
M J C, 1/12, AL, Jan.

***BSF Note: Child MJC Teel is listed here, but was listed on the 1870 Mortality Index immediately after Patrick Smith as having died in Jan. 1870.

Most census records indicate Patrick was born bet 1787-1788 in TN, however, I've opted to go with the 1788 VA information from the 1870 Mortality Index.

Mary Ann Lindsey Smith had to have died between the 1866 AL State Census (for Patrick Smith, Sr.) and his Jan. 1870 death.

Per the 1870 Coosa Co, AL Census Schedule 1. he had to have been living in Flint Hill at his death, either with the HJ Smith or WH Coleman family. However, the Ancestry preview / summary transcription shows he died in "Jones Bluff, Coosa Co, AL." Why the discrepancy?

My guess is that since the page on which Patrick is shown does not list a town, the transcriber used the town on the previous page, Jordan's Beat, but incorrectly transcribed it as Jones Bluff. Google maps shows a Jones Creek near Flint Hill Cemetery. Could there be a Jones Bluff there also?

Some researchers believe he was probably buried in an unmarked (or now lost) grave at Old Poplar Springs Cemetery (Hanover Beat?), about 6 miles from Rockford.

Flint Hill is a Methodist Church and if his children, John A. and Guy, were Baptists as some were known to be (namely then it seems more probable that Patrick, too, was a Baptist.

My guess is that he was buried somewhere in the Flint Hill enumeration district, but I am not sure what modern areas that encompassed in 1870.

Hopefully, this new information on his date of death and where he lived at his death will help narrow down his place of burial, if not also locate his grave (and possibly Mary's).

Please contact me with any additions or corrections or if someone can help me with research on these locations that might help locate his probable grave site.
